A Weekend in Saugerties

Saugerties is a small town in Ulster County. It has been on my “to visit” list for ages and our family finally got the chance to see this Hudson Valley town. Saugerties is a weekend touristy town. Visitors beware: many of the town’s restaurants and shops are closed during the week, so plan accordingly! There’s enough to see and do for a weekend stay. However, it’s also close enough to Westchester County that you can visit for just the day.

Where to Stay:

Diamond Mills Hotel
Thank you to the Diamond Mills Hotel for hosting NY Foodie Family. As always, all opinions are our own.

The Diamond Mills Hotel (25 S. Partition St.) – We stayed at the Diamond Mills Hotel for one night. This is a 30 room luxury boutique hotel located conveniently within walking distance to many shops and restaurants.

Diamond Mills Hotel - Hotel Room

We stayed in a room with two Queen beds. We all commented on how soft the beds were. The room was light and bright and the hotel provided bathrobes for you to wear, if you wish. I didn’t realize that I absolutely need a bathroom with heated floors until I got to experience it firsthand in our hotel bathroom!

Diamond Mills Hotel Waterfall

The highlight of this hotel is being able to walk out on your balcony to this view! The in-room Keurig was appreciated, since I got to enjoy an early morning cup of coffee out on the balcony, while everyone else was still sleeping.

What to Do:

Falling Waters Preserve waterfall

Falling Water Preserve (996 Dominican Lane, Glasco, NY) – This is a Scenic Hudson Valley park that has two small waterfalls. There are three different trails, all of which are super easy and very scenic. There are plenty of benches along the trails for hikers to sit and enjoy the views.

Kayaing on the Esopus Creek

Kayaking – We booked a last minute kayak rental with Gail from I Paddle NY. She rents out kayaks, tandem kayaks, and Stand Up Paddleboards as well as offers a variety of kayak tours. Rentals and tours are available spring through fall.

Opus 40 (50 Fite Road) – I’d be remiss not to mention Opus 40, as this is THE attraction that I think Saugerties is most well-known for. I had waited until the last minute to purchase tickets, since the weather during our visit was looking iffy. By the time I went to purchase tickets, they were no longer available for Sunday. I hope to visit Opus 40, possibly in the spring, with just my husband, as my children have already expressed their lack of interest.

Saugerties Lighthouse (168 Lighthouse Drive) – During our visit, the Saugerties Lighthouse and the adjacent areas were unfortunately closed to visitors. We drove by hoping to at least take some pictures, but had no luck. During non-Covid times, there are two guest bedrooms in the lighthouse that can be rented out! Visitors can hike to the lighthouse, accessible by a half-mile nature trail. Tours are scheduled on Sundays, by appointment only (during non-Covid times).

Seamon Park

Seamon Park (5 Malden Avenue) – Owned by the Village of Saugerties, this park is free and open to the public. Fall is a great time to visit Seamon Park, when the mums are in bloom. In non-COVID times, there is a mum festival on the first Sunday in October. (Open daily 9 AM – dusk)

Shop – Partition Street is filled with lots of shops. From bookstores, to home decor, antiques, and clothing, there are plenty of stores for you to shop ’til you drop.

Where to Eat:

Alleyway Ice Cream

Alleyway Ice Cream (135 Partition Street) – Alleyway Ice Cream is literally located down an alleyway off Partition Street. I had been drooling over Alleyway Ice Cream’s Instagram pics for ages and was so happy to finally get to try their ice cream. I was disappointed that they were out of “Thai Tea Cookies & Cream” flavor during our visit. I was really looking forward to it. But I enjoyed both the “Honeycomb Chocolate Swirl” and “Ube Heath Bar”. (Open Wednesday – Sunday)

Diamond Mills Tavern Sticky Tofu

Thank you to the Diamond Mills Tavern for hosting NY Foodie Family. As always, all opinions are our own.

Diamond Mills Tavern (25 South Partition Street) – The Diamond Mills Tavern sits adjacent to the Diamond Mills Hotel. The restaurant just debuted its new fall menu and has both indoor and outdoor seating. They have a varied menu that offers some vegetarian options. The Sticky Tofu appetizer, pictured above, was a favorite and the appetizer portion was huge!

Diamond Mills Tavern Butternut Squash Carpaccio

I enjoyed the tofu with the Butternut Squash Carpaccio Salad.

Diamond Mills Tavern Carnivore Pizza

My meat-eating son enjoyed the Carnivore pizza that has prosciutto, bacon, salami, pepperoni AND sausage! My husband had the Beet (yes, beet) Wellington and my daughter enjoyed the Impossible Burger. I’m just disappointed that we were too full to try some of their new fall desserts! (Open Wednesday – Sunday for lunch and dinner and brunch on weekends)

Josie's Coffee Shoppe

Josie’s Coffee Shoppe (174 Partition Street) – Stop by Josie’s for your morning caffeine fix. There are also a variety of pastries to get your sugar fix as well!

Love Bites Cafe Sweet Chili Cauliflower Wings

Love Bites Cafe (69 Partition Street) – This cafe’s menu features locally sourced ingredients and offers vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options. My son devoured the Chicken and Waffles. The Bohemian Club was tasty, but a bit messy, as is often the case with foods featuring portobello mushrooms. But our favorite were these Sweet Chili Cauliflower Wings! (Open Friday – Sunday)

Slices of Saugeries Grandma Slice

Slices of Saugerties (71 Partition Street) – No joke, their Grandma style Tomato, Basil, Mozzarella slice was so good, we had to go back for another slice on our second day! There’s a reason this is a “Best of Hudson Valley” winner! (Open 7 days a week)

Brine Barrel Pickles

Brine Barrel (237 Partition Street) – We stopped at Brine Barrel before we headed back home to get some pickles to go. We got a combo of half-sour, dill, and sour dill pickles to bring home. They did not last long in our house before we devoured them!

As you can see, there is lots for visitors to enjoy during a weekend in Saugerties! It is close enough to home that we can’t wait to go back and visit the restaurants and attractions that we didn’t have time to enjoy on this trip!

Five on Friday {Mid-October}

Happy Friday and happy weekend! It’s hard to believe that we are halfway through October! The weather looked okay last Sunday, so we headed up to Saugerties for the one night. This was our first time visiting the Hudson Valley town and we had fun exploring and eating over the two days. More details and pics are below. The kids are halfway through their first quarter of school which seems crazy! My son is going on a Boy Scout camping trip this weekend, so as of now we don’t have any big plans. I think I want to do some fall baking, which I have done none of yet! Here are five from this week:

1. Kayaking – We started our day up in Saugerties going kayaking. This was an activity that my son had wanted to do over the summer. It was very last minute and I literally booked the kayaks Friday night. But, I’m so glad that I did. We all had such a good time out on the water. Plus, we got a good arm workout in and were able to see some beautiful views.

2. Hiking – Up in Saugerties we did a very easy hike at Falling Waters Preserve.

There were two very small waterfalls but it was a very scenic hike with beautiful views of the Hudson River.

3. Eating – We did a lot of eating up in Saugerties! I was happy to finally try Alleyway Ice Cream after following them on Instagram for so long! They were out of Thai Tea Cookies and Cream, which I really wanted. But this Honeycomb Chocolate Swirl and Ube Heath Bar were both really good!

I had this Tomato, Basil, Mozzarella Grandma-style slice from Slices of Saugerties on Saturday. It was so good, that we went back on Sunday for another slice!

These Sweet Chili Cauliflower Wings from Love Bites Cafe were delicious!

And this sticky tofu from the Diamond Mills Tavern were another favorite.

4. Reading – Yesterday I finally finished Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Taila Hibbert. This was a fun chick lit/romance read, where the couple was so awkwardly cute. I’m finishing up Darling Rose Gold by Stephanie Wrobel (my physical book) and have started You Are Not Alone by Greer Hendricks (my kindle book).

5. Field Hockey – My daughter’s varsity field hockey team had their first game last Saturday morning. It was an away game and visitors were not allowed. The other team had a production company come and videotape the game, which they aired on YouTube. Although my daughter didn’t get any play time this game it was still fun to be able to watch the game. Unfortunately, they ended up losing 0-3.

September Reads {2020}

This post contains affiliate links. Please read our Disclosure Policy for additional info.

Today I’m sharing my September reads with Steph and Jana’s monthly Show Us Your Books linkup. Last month I completed my Goodreads reading challenge goal of 75 books. Unfortunately, my reading has slowed way down. In September I only read 5 books, but luckily, they were mostly great reads. Here are my September reads:

3 Stars

38240386

An Unwanted Guest by Shari Lapena – (Suspense/Thriller, August 2018) – A series of guests arrive at an Inn just as a blizzard hits. As guests begin to wind up dead, the goal becomes to survive the weekend. I’ve read several other of Lapena’s books but this one wasn’t a winner for me.

4 Stars

52588078

28 Summers by Elin Hilderbrand – (Contemporary Fiction, June 2020) Girl inherits a house on Nantucket. Girl meets boy. Girl and boy then have a one weekend a year affair at said house for 28 summers. I’ve only read a couple of Hilderbrand’s books and haven’t loved most of them. This was a surprisingly enjoyable read. I got this summer read finished right before the official start of fall!

52652923. sy475

The Last Flight by Julie Clark – (Suspense/Thriller, June 2020) Two women, who both want to disappear and start their lives over, meet at an airport and end up switching plane tickets. Their decisions ultimately have huge consequences. This was an enjoyable suspense read that had me invested in the lives of both women.

35887567. sy475

On the Come Up by Angie Thomas – (YA – February 2019) – A poor, teenage girl, with a lot of family drama, struggles to become a rapper. This was a great read, but I just didn’t love it as much as The Hate U Give.

40670312. sy475

The One by John Marrs – (Thriller/Science Fiction – March 2018) A company has a DNA test that will match you with your perfect partner. However, is it too good to be true? Overall, I found this to be an enjoyable suspense read.

Five on Friday {Columbus Day Weekend}

Happy Friday! This week felt like it dragged on and I’m so happy for a three day weekend! Saturday is busy with my daughter having her first field hockey game of the season. My son is going to his friend’s birthday party. Then we are supposed to be going away Sunday for a quick one night getaway to Saugerties. However, the weather isn’t looking so great for Sunday and Monday, so it’s still up in the air as to whether we are going away or not. Here are five from this week:

1. Hike – Saturday Dana and I hiked Mount Beacon in Beacon, NY.  This was a 2 mile round trip hike and the views at the top were beautiful.

2. – Dinner with my parents – Sunday my parents were back in New York for the night. So, they brought Chinese food over for dinner. It was so good to see them and catch up since it had been over a month and a half since we last saw them.

Lily Collins as Emily in an episode "Emily in Paris."

3. Watching –  The Vice Presidential Debate, which was much better than the first Presidential Debate. I also watched the first episode of Emily in Paris on Netflix. The scenes of Paris are beautiful! While the show seems “young” it is rated MA.

4. Eating – This week I had a vegan coffee and chocolate donuts ice cream cone.

These Vegan Greek Tofu and Fry Wraps were one of our favorite dinners this week.

I made Kimchi Pancakes for the first time. It was so easy and they were so good that I’ll be making these again soon.

52439847

5.Reading –  I’ve started reading Feels Like Falling by Kristy Woodson Harvey. I’m only about a quarter of the way in but I’m really enjoying it.

ICYMI this week on the blog:

Tuesday I posted shared a post about the West Point Foundry Preserve in Cold Spring.

Sharing with Friday Favorites!  Have a great weekend!

West Point Foundry Preserve {Cold Spring}

Don’t let the name of the West Point Foundry Preserve fool you. It’s across the Hudson River from West Point, and it’s one of Scenic Hudson’s parks located in Cold Spring. This 90 acre preserve is an outdoor museum, showcasing the remnants of the ironworks and machine shop that operated from 1818 to approximately 1911.

West Point Foundry Information

Don’t expect a strenuous hike when you visit the West Point Foundry Preserve. There are several historical exhibits that you can view while enjoying more of a leisurely stroll. You can listen to an audiovisual tour of the Foundry as you walk to learn more about the sites.

West Point Foundry Gun Platform

The yellow-marked “Foundry Trail” is approximately one mile in length. The first stop on the trail is a recreation of the Foundry’s gun platform. This is the site where each cannon was tested prior to delivery to the military. The target was Storm King Mountain across the other side of the river. Unexploded ordinance was still being cleared off the mountain as recently as 1999.

West Point Foundry walking path

There is a metal pathway for smooth, flat walking. We were fairly surprised to find this path right in the woods

West Point Foundry 1865 Office Building

The next point of interest on the path is the 1865 Office Building. The Civil War was the busiest time for the West Point Foundry, as it produced thousands of cannons and millions of shells for the military. It used to be a massive complex including railways, shops and offices. However, the only structure remaining is this office building. Work has been done to preserve this building, but it is not open to the public. It’s believed that the building is in fairly good shape since it was built just prior to the sharp decline in foundry business following the Civil War. It didn’t get a lot of heavy use.

West Point Foundry Boring Mill Water Wheel

The Boring Mill Water Wheel onsite is a partial replica, to scale, of the original wheel that helped power some of the machinery that produced various products the Foundry made.

West Point Foundry stairs

As you pass the Boring Mill overlook, you take the staircase up to the hiking path. From here, the trail splits and you can go left to finish the yellow trail or go right to link up to the red trail.

We opted to continue on the yellow trail which then brings you back to the parking lot. We highly recommend continuing past the parking lot to the blue “Cold Spring and Foundry Cove” trail. This trail will take you into the town of Cold Spring.

However, we walked this trail just to the overlook. The staircase leads up to a viewing platform of Foundry Cove. There are several benches available to sit and enjoy the views. Unfortunately, we visited on a pretty cloudy day. I can see myself coming here in the future with a book and some snacks to enjoy some time in nature and to soak up the scenery. With some sun and some more fall foliage and this view will be spectacular!

Five on Friday {Hello October!}

This post contains affiliate links. Your purchase helps support the blog at no additional cost.

Happy Friday and hello October! It was so nice to have a three day weekend and shortened work week. Schedules are getting busy again with Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. My daughter is on the Varsity field hockey team and has practices every afternoon and Saturday mornings! This week we also had her high school virtual back-to-school night. Here are five from this week:

1. Outdoor Art – Last weekend we visited Tilly Foster Farm to see the Collaborative Concepts outdoor art exhibit.

Then of course we had to stop and visit with the animals!

Sarah Paulson as Mildred Ratched in Netflix's new series 'Ratched'

2. Watching – Dana and I have been watching Ratched. Ryan Murphy of American Horror Story and Glee fame, has created this new show for Netflix. It’s a little weird and a bit gruesome. We are only a couple of episodes in, but hooked. The new season of the Great British Baking show also arrived on Netflix so we’ve been watching that as well.

Enola Holmes poster.jpeg

We had family move night this week and watched Enola Holmes on Netflix. We all enjoyed it and it was nice to see Millie Bobby Brown in such a different role from Eleven in Stranger Things.

39410817. sx318

3. Reading – I am reading two books. Whisper Network by Chandler Baker is my physical book. I’m not loving it but don’t dislike it enough to give up on it. I also started Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert on my kindle. It’s easier for me to bring my kindle to work, when I sometimes get a chance to read during lunch.

4. Hiking – I’m not sure that I’d call our visit to the West Point Foundry on Sunday a hike. It was more of a walk in the woods. Regardless, it was a new-to-us location and offered beautiful scenic views. I want to go back a little later in the season when the fall foliage is at its peak, since I’m sure it will be even more picturesque.

5. Eating – This past weekend we visited the Moon Light Cafe in Brewster. This restaurant has a lot of vegan food options. But the highlight was this vegan soft serve ice cream. I got the vanilla and acai guava orange twist. It was sooo good!

We also visited Vera’s Garden Center and Marketplace in Cold Spring to try their cider donuts. They are voted one of the top 5 in the Hudson Valley and now we know why. These were some delicious donuts!

And I tried the 1911 Cider Donut Hard Cider. It’s a sweet cider with hints of brown sugar and cinnamon. While I didn’t love it, it’s a tasty enough seasonal cider.

Tuesday I posted about Kelder’s Farm.

Wednesday I posted about Collaborative Concepts at Tilly Foster Farm.

Thursday I posted Halloween Fun in the Hudson Valley.

Sharing with Friday Favorites. Have a great weekend!

Collaborative Concepts at Tilly Foster Farm

A giant earthworm, penguins, sheep and a peacock are just a few of the over 30 pieces of art that you can see at the Collaborative Concepts outdoor art exhibition taking place at Tilly Foster Farm. There are 31 more days left to view this outdoor sculpture exhibit in Brewster.

Sculpture at Collaborative Concepts

Collaborative Concepts was founded in 1999 and  has presented over 40 exhibitions throughout the Hudson Valley. Their mission is to, “provide the community with exceptional cultural experiences.” Their current project is doing just that, offering visitors a chance to see a variety of sculptures at no cost.

Sheep Sculpture at Collaborative Concepts exhibit

Tilly Foster Farm Project 2020 opened September 5th and will close on October 31st. There is a variety of fun and interesting pieces on display.

Sculpture at Tilly Foster Farm

Due to COVID this is a self-guided show.  When you arrive, there is a QR code that can be scanned on your phone to access a map of the sculptures.  Many of these pieces of art are even for sale. We had a fun time walking around and playing “Guess how much this one costs?!”

After you walk around and look at the art, be sure to leave some time to visit the animals!

Alpacas at Tilly Foster Farm

Tilly Foster Farm is home to four alpacas, pigs, goats, chickens and two miniature horses.

Tilly Foster Farm

Thursday through Sunday evenings, you can enjoy dinner at Tilly’s Table Restaurant after you view the art exhibit. The restaurant also serves brunch on Sunday mornings and offers both indoor and outdoor seating.

Fall Fun at Kelder’s Farm

*Please note that we visited Kelder’s Farm last October. Things may look different this year due to COVID and social distancing.

If you are looking for something to do with the family this October, enjoy some fall fun at Kelder’s Farm in Kerhonkson. We visited Kelder’s Farm last October to enjoy a day of fall family fun. There is so much to see and do for families with kids of all ages.

Kelder's Farm - World's largest Garden Gnome

First, you HAVE to take a picture with the World’s Largest Garden Gnome!

Kelder's Farm corn maze

The main reason we visited Kelder’s Farm was to walk through the corn maze. This was a fall bucket list item for me and Kelder’s Farm has two corn mazes that guests can enjoy! The mazes were challenging enough but not impossible.

Kelder's Farm Apple Cannon

We all enjoyed shooting apples from the apple cannons!

Kelder's Farm feeding the animals

One of our favorite parts of the farm was visiting the animals. We purchased bags of feed and some vegetables and enjoyed feeding them to the goats and alpacas.

Kelder's Farm Bounce Pillow

My kids weren’t interested in jumping on the pillow, which is included with the admission.

But we all enjoyed climbing the hay bales!

Kelder's Farm mini golf

We played a round of miniature golf. While picturesque with foliage, we found the course in need of some TLC.

Kelder's farm pumpkin patch

When you visit in the fall, you can go apple picking and pumpkin picking. Some vegetables may still be available in the U-pick section. Check directly with the farm for availability and pricing. The farm is fairly large and they have a tractor-driven hay ride that you can take down to the corn maze and pumpkin fields.

Kelder's Farm cider donut

Kelder’s Farm serves food at The Ice Cream Barn including pizza, burgers and of course, ice cream. While we didn’t eat at the Farm (we crossed the street and enjoyed pierogies at Helena’s Pierogies), we of course couldn’t pass up cider doughnuts! We had to wait a little bit, but it was worth it for hot, fresh doughnuts!

There is so much to do at Kelder’s Farm that you can easily enjoy a full day visiting the farm.
