Five on Friday {First Snowfall}

(This post contains affiliate links.  Read our Disclosure Policy for more info.)

Happy Friday!  We had our first snowfall of the season, which turned out to be more of a snowstorm.  The kids and I had early dismissals from school and work.  My husband thought he was leaving early at 4 PM, but after moving less than a block in 45 minutes turned back around and decided to wait it out back at the office for a bit.  All of the major highways to get home were basically parking lots, with slippery roads and accidents.  This weekend we will be celebrating my husband’s birthday, which is Monday.  While plans have not been finalized, I’m sure they will involve good food, as most of our celebrations do!  Here are five from this week:

38532193

1. Reading – I am still reading Jodi Picoult’s A Spark of Light.  However, around this time of year, I like to read a couple of Christmas themed books as well.  So, I’m also in the middle of reading The White Christmas Inn by Colleen Wright.  It’s one of those feel-good books where you know everything will end up working out.  So basically, a good holiday read!

OceansEightPoster.jpeg

2. Watching – Last weekend we watched Ocean’s 8.  This was the first Ocean’s movie that I’ve seen and I have to admit the only reason I watched it was because of the all-female cast.  I am happy to admit that I really enjoyed it too!

3. Snacking On – My husband and son went to HMart, a large Asian grocery store, and picked up some snacks.  So far, we’ve tried these Ppushu Ppushu Korean noodle snacks.  They are crunchy, ramen noodles that you break up, sprinkle a seasoning packet on and eat up.  I’m sure they aren’t the best for you, but they were tasty!

4. Christmas Card Picture – I am happy to say that we got the Christmas card picture taken last weekend!  I knew that I wanted this background at a nearby county park.  The weather was beautiful, but a little chilly.  My son was very uncooperative.  And after what felt like hours, we finally got a keeper!  I thought it was supposed to get easier to take pictures as the kids got older.  But this was a challenge!

5. Cooking – The cold weather has had me cooking all the comfort food.  This week, one of the winning dishes was Half Baked Harvest’s 30 Minute Butter Chicken Meatballs.  It’s like Indian Chicken Tikka Masala.  But didn’t take forever to cook.

Your Best Weekend {Volume 12}

(This post contains affiliate links.  Please read our Disclosure Policy for more information.)

Welcome to another edition of “Your Best Weekend.”  Enjoy these ideas and recommendations to help you make the most of your Saturday and Sunday.  We are all busy but we need to make time to enjoy life!

Celebrate:

Saturday, November 17, celebrate Homemade Bread Day by making a loaf.  If you’re feeling brave, try a new bread.  These rolls look so good!  Otherwise, you can always go with a quick bread, like this seasonally appropriate Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Bread.

November 17 is also Take a Hike Day!  There’s still some fall foliage left.  Get out on the trails for some outdoor family fun!  If you’re local, we like Rockefeller State Park.

Self-Care:

Journal Prompt/Reflection: What do you want people to remember about you?

Challenge:  Binge watch a show you’ve been wanting to see or re-watch an old favorite!  Some shows that I’d like to binge watch include The Office, Mad Men, Narcos……yeah, haven’t seen any of these.

New Releases:

DVD – Out on DVD this week is The Meg, Mile 22 and Alpha.  Other movies that are out on DVD that aren’t as well-known but look good and have gotten decent ratings include Juliet, Naked and Puzzle.

Books – New books published this week include Becoming by Michelle Obama (memoir), It’s Not Supposed to Be This Way by Lysa TerKeurst (spiritual), Look Alive Twenty-Five by Janet Evanovich (series/mystery), Long Road to Mercy by David Baldacci (Thriller/Fiction), P is for Pterodactyl: The Worst Alphabet Book Ever by Raj Haldar (children’s book/humor), Goodnight Trump: A Parody by Erich Origen (humor/politics), and Queer Eye:  Love Yourself, Love Your Life by Antonio Porowski (self help).

Family Fun:

Dinner Conversation Starter:  What is one thing that you own that you can’t live without?

Family Fun Idea: Run a 5K together.

Date Night Idea:  Go to a Comedy Club.  Sit back, relax and have some laughs.

Weekly Recommendations:

WatchOcean’s 8.  This was the first movie of the whole Ocean’s series that I watched.  The all-female cast had me intrigued.  We watched this as a family and we all enjoyed it.

Cook – Half Baked Harvest’s 30 Minute Butter Chicken Meatballs.  If you like Indian Chicken Masala, you will likely enjoy these meatballs.  I made them for dinner this week and served them with rice, naan and broccoli.

6558151

Read – Around this time of year I like to start reading Christmas-themed books.   Expect some holiday book recommendations over the next couple of weeks!  The first one is The Christmas Cookie Club.  Twelve women get together in early December to share cookies and stories.  This book was published in 2009 and I read it in 2012. Even though this book has gotten mixed reviews, I remember really enjoying it.  Plus, it comes with cookie recipes!  It’s not a sappy read, like many holiday books are, but more holiday-themed chick lit.

A Weekend in Cooperstown

(Thank you Go Cooperstown for hosting NY Foodie Family!  As always, all opinions are our own.)

Cooperstown is a small village in central New York, most well-known for the National Baseball Hall of Fame.  After a recent visit to Cooperstown, we can tell you that there’s a lot more to see and do after visiting the iconic museum.

Stay:

Lake ‘N Pines Motel kindly hosted our two night stay in Cooperstown.  This motel offers a variety of accommodations from rooms with one double bed to rooms with two queen beds and even 2 bedroom mini suites.  We stayed in Cottage 120, a 2 bedroom suite that is adjacent to the game room.  The decor is cozy with a look and feel reminiscent of our college apartments.

With a full kitchen and living room, there was plenty of space for the four of us.  For those staying in Cooperstown for more than a day or two, this suite is great to cook some meals, as dining out when traveling can get expensive.  The Motel has an indoor and an outdoor pool, sauna, hot tub, as well as a game room.  A complimentary Continental breakfast is served here.

On nice days, you can eat outside with beautiful views of Lake Otsego.  The village of Cooperstown is a short, approximately, ten-minute drive.

Visit:

The National Baseball Hall of Fame – People flock to Cooperstown from all over the world to visit the National Baseball Hall of Fame.  Even non-baseball fans will enjoy a visit to this museum.  Read about our visit to the Baseball Hall of Fame!

Fenimore Art Museum –  The Fenimore Art Museum is well-known for its collection of folk art and the Thaw Collection of American Indian Art.  Read more about our visit to this museum.

The Farmer’s Museum – Across from the Fenimore Art Museum is The Farmer’s Museum.  Step back in time to 19th century rural life where you can visit historic buildings, see demonstrations and speak with interpreters.  Taking a ride on the Empire State Carousel is a must! Read about our visit to this fun and educational family experience.

Fly Creek Cider Mill – Fly Creek Cider Mill is a short drive from Cooperstown.  Enjoy lots of tasty food and cider samples, eat a delicious meal at the Snack Barn and watch apple cider being made. That’s just some of the fun you can have here.  Read about our tasty visit!

Cooperstown Beverage Exchange – Down the street from the National Baseball Hall of Fame is the Cooperstown Beverage Exchange.  This space, owned and operated by the Cooperstown Distillery, is both a tasting room and retail space.  You can sample and purchase their spirits, including vodka, bourbon, whiskey and gin.  You can purchase full drinks or cocktails to enjoy in the sitting area that they have.  In the evening, the space turns into a bar/cocktail lounge, with live music on many nights.

Eat:

Doubleday Cafe – We asked an employee at the National Baseball Hall of Fame where he recommended we get lunch.  For a sit-down lunch, he recommended the Doubleday Cafe.  This cafe is a short walk from the Hall of Fame.  It was packed during our visit and rightly so.  The cafe offers a variety of soups, burgers, sandwiches and more.  They also have daily lunch specials – two of which we ordered including the Grilled Pastrami, Bacon & Provolone on Rye (pictured above) and the “Cafe” Burger with caramelized onions, blue cheese and bacon.

My husband was even able to enjoy “A Taste of Cooperstown Beer Flight” with his lunch here!

Fly Creek Cider Mill – If you plan to visit Fly Creek Cider Mill, which I recommend, make sure you eat lunch or an early dinner at the Snack Barn Restaurant.  They have a variety of value combo meals that include chips, beverage and a slice of pie.  Everything we ate here was delicious!

New York Pizzeria – We have plenty of amazing pizza places near us in Westchester County and all of the ones in NYC.  So, we had high expectations going into a place called New York Pizzeria.  We weren’t wowed by the pizza but it was decent.  The restaurant has plenty of seating, including an upstairs dining area.  They serve a variety of Italian dishes including different kinds of pasta, chicken and eggplant parmigiana, appetizers, salads and more.

As you can see, there’s lots to see, do, and eat in Cooperstown!  The village is about a 3 hour drive from Northern Westchester County, making it a perfect weekend getaway!

October Reads {2018}

(This post contains affiliate links.  Please read our Disclosure Policy for more information.)

It’s the second Tuesday of the month and time to share my October Reads with Steph and Jana’s Show Us Your Books linkup.  I’m going to be honest, October was a pretty disappointing reading month for me.  Almost all of my reads were 3 stars and just okay reads.  And it was a slow reading month for me with only five books read.  Here they are from least to most liked:

3 stars:
36344555

All We Ever Wanted by Emily Giffin – I used to be a big Emily Giffin fan and have read almost every one of her books.  I actually enjoyed this story that shows the divide between the wealthy and the not-so-wealthy and the effects that bad decisions teens make can have on their peers and families.  My only issue was that the story felt unresolved to me and rushed at the end.

35148305

The Girlfriend by Michelle Frances – Laura is happy to meet her son’s new girlfriend.  But she doesn’t get good vibes from Cherry (yes, I had a problem with this name!), and thinks that she’s a manipulative gold digger.  But her son has fallen for her and now must choose between his girlfriend and mother.  When Daniel is injured in an accident, Laura makes a decision that she thinks is in his best interest….but ultimately there are consequences.  Some things in this book were a bit far fetched, but overall an okay suspense read.

34663139

Next of Kin by James Tucker – This is the first book in the Detective Buddy Lock series.  I’ve been avoiding starting a new series, but decided to give this one a go.  Detective Lock investigates the murder of the prestigious Brook family.  Their 10-year-old son Ben, is the only survivor, but someone wants him dead too.  Buddy tries to keep Ben safe while finding the murderer.  This was a quick read and an okay mystery.  I’m willing to give the next book in the series a try.

36212848

The Other Woman by Sandie Jones – I didn’t realize when I put this book on hold that it had a very similar premise to The Girlfriend – son has a girlfriend, mom is jealous.  So, I might have tired of the plot line and thus my 3 star rating.  But I don’t know.  The story had me interested, but questioning why does Emily stay with Adam?  Pammie did some shady things to keep Emily away from her son.  This was a suspenseful read and the ending totally surprised me….so it may be worth the read if you like suspense books.  Of the two, I’d recommend this one over The Girlfriend.

4 stars:
35542451
Girl, Wash Your Face by Rachel Hollis – This was my non-fiction read of the month.  I have become a fan of Rachel Hollis after listening to the Rise Together podcast that she does with her husband.  Then I learned that she has her own podcast Rise and realized that I read one of her fiction books Party Girl and really liked it.  In this book, she talks about the lies that we tell ourselves and how we need to get over them to live our best life.  It’s an inspiring read told in a very down-to-earth way.

Five on Friday {Veteran’s Day Weekend}

(This post contains affiliate links.  Please read our Disclosure Policy for additional info.)

Happy Friday!  Today, the kids are hopefully taking good school picture retakes.  I end up paying a fortune for their school photos every year and gosh darn it, I want to be happy with them.  Last year the kids had great pics.  This year, my son left his sweatshirt on and both him and my daughter had these fake smiles.  Fingers crossed that the pictures today come out better! My daughter had her last field hockey game this week, so I’m hoping that our weekdays calm down a little bit.  We have a three day weekend because of Veteran’s Day.  Weather-dependent, I want to try to get a head start on the Christmas card photo!  Here are five from this week:

1. Reading – I picked up A Spark of Light by Jodi Picoult from the library Tuesday.  Even though I’m not quite done with Tear Me Apart by J.T. Ellison, I also had to start the Picoult book.  Especially since it’s a two week only loan!

2. Watching – Saturday, my son and I headed into NYC, as we were invited to see the Off-Broadway play Puffs.  It’s a fun parody of the Harry Potter books, told from the perspective of the Puffs.  Since he’s such a big Harry Potter fan and we read the books together and watched the movies, I knew he’d enjoy it.

3. Eating – Hudson Valley Restaurant Week continues and Friday night my husband and I went out to eat with our supper club.  We had a delicious dinner at a new-to-us local restaurant.  I can never pass up a braised short rib.  Especially in the fall. It’s such tasty comfort food.

4. Mother-Daughter Time – Sunday, I got to spend one-on-one time with my daughter at a Girl Scout Mother/Daughter bowling event.  While I didn’t bowl my best, even with the bumpers up, it was a fun time.

5. And More Eating – When we were on our way home from the city, my son and I stopped at Shake Shack in Grand Central for a late lunch.  We shared a Chick’n Shack and a Strawberry Shake.  We may have almost missed our train but it would have been worth it.

Your Best Weekend {Volume 11}

(This post contains affiliate links.  Please read our Disclosure Policy for additional information.)

After a short hiatus, “Your Best Weekend” is back for another appearance!  Enjoy these ideas and recommendations to help you make the most of your Saturday and Sunday.  We are all busy but we need to make time to enjoy life!

Celebrate:

Veteran’s Day is Sunday, November 11.  Please take some time to remember all of the brave men and women who protect our country.

Self-Care:

Journal Prompt/Reflection:  What is one book that you’d like to read before the end of 2018?

Challenge:  Start a compliments list.  Write down the positive things that people say about you.  When you’re feeling down, look at your list for a little mood booster.

New Releases:

DVD – This week Incredibles 2 and Christopher Robin come out on DVD.  Both of these movies look like perfect family movie night picks.

Amazon Prime – Homecoming, a new Prime original series, debuted November 2.  This psychological thriller, starring Julia Roberts, is getting a lot of press.  It may be worth checking out this weekend.

Books – Books published this week include Homebody: A Guide to Creating Spaces You Never Want to Leave by Joanna Gaines (non-fiction/lifestyle), Past Tense: a Jack Reacher Novel by Lee Child (fiction, thriller), Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty (fiction), The Universe Has Your Back Journal by Gabrielle Bernstein (Self-Help/Spirituality), Archenemies by Marissa Meyer (series/Teen Sci-Fi), The Noel Stranger by Richard Paul Evans (Holiday), Juno Valentine and the Magical Shoes (Children’s Book), The Colors of All the Cattle by Alexander McCall Smith (series/Mystery), You Don’t Own Me by Mary Higgins Clark (mystery).  And for fans of Jeff Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, #13 The Meltdown was published last week.

Family Fun:

Dinner Conversation Starter: What was the hardest thing that you’ve ever done?

Family Fun Idea: Get a head start on the holiday wish lists.  The holiday toy fliers are already out.  Have kids circle what they want or head to the stores and have them take pictures or write down some wish list ideas.  You can get a head start on the holiday shopping and maybe take advantage of some Black Friday deals.

Weekly Recommendations:

Watch: The Carbonaro Effect on Netflix.  This has been our recent family binge watch.  It’s a hidden camera/practical joke/magic show.  We watch every time and are like, “How did he do that?!!”

Eat:  In season.  Check out this site to see what produce is in season where you live.  I am all about the brussels sprouts!

To-Do:  If you haven’t already, get your flu shot!  Flu season tends to begin in December and can last through April.

Weekend Getaway to Crystal Springs Resort

(Thank you Crystal Springs Resort for providing lodging accommodations for NY Foodie Family.  Meals were not included in our stay and were paid for by NY Foodie Family.  As always, all opinions are our own.)

Our family  loves to travel, visit new places and have new experiences.  However, our days (and weekends) have been super busy, now that school has started and we are deep into activities and sports.  A relaxing weekend getaway to Crystal Springs Resort in Hamburg, New Jersey is just what we needed.  From northern Westchester County, the resort is only a little over an hour away by car.

Crystal Springs Resort truly is a resort, housing two hotels (Grand Cascades Lodge and Minerals Hotel), six golf courses and housing developments.  Yes, you can own a house, townhouse or even a suite in the Grand Cascades Lodge.  Seasonally, there are up to ten different dining options available.

We stayed at the Grand Cascades Lodge.  This location offers several different room types including standard guest rooms and one and two-bedroom suites, including some that have fireplaces.

We stayed in a one bedroom suite with a pull-out sofa in the living room.  There was more than enough room for the four of us. Plus, the suite had a kitchen, dining table and chairs.  If the weather was nicer, we could have enjoyed sitting outside on the patio, though the room that we stayed in (Room 101) didn’t have views of the property as it is on the ground level .  The lodge has several floors, many offering rooms with balconies that offer beautiful views.

The weekend of our visit was cold and rainy.  So, unfortunately, this limited the activities available to us.  Most of our time was spent inside at the biosphere pool.  This is Crystal Springs Resort’s 10,000 square foot indoor pool complex.  The plants and fountains create a tropical indoor oasis.

The kids had a fun time going down the slide countless times and wading around the pool.  I actually put on a bathing suit to bubble away in the hot tub.  Our family favorite was enjoying the heated outdoor pool. Our bodies were toasty while our heads were splattered by chilly raindrops!

Grand Cascades Lodge guests can enjoy the pool and activities at the Minerals Hotel, the sister resort, located approximately a ten minute drive away.  However, the biosphere pool is only accessible to Grand Cascades Lodge guests.  If our visit was longer we would have stayed to explore the Minerals pool and activities, but we wanted to take advantage of what the Cascades Lodge offered.

Speaking of activities, Crystal Springs Resort offers all types of activities, regardless of when you visit.  On your arrival, you are given a schedule of events.  Many of the activities do require a reservation and/or additional fees.  Unfortunately, the rain impacted the outdoor activities available to us.

I stopped by the Apple & Hard Cider Sampling while my husband and kids stayed at the biosphere.  Warwick Valley Winery and Black Dirt Distillery is located in Warwick, NY, an approximately 25 minute drive from the resort.  A representative from the winery shared samples of their rose, original apple and pear ciders.  I especially enjoyed the apple and pear ciders, as I prefer sweeter ciders.  Warwick is a beautiful town and I hope to visit the winery and distillery soon.

The kids took a break from the biosphere pool for the live animal show with Wallaby Tales.  This free show brings exotic and abandoned animals to the public.  The show was informative and we had such a great time petting Milkshake (the rabbit) and the chinchilla.  It was fun to watch Phyllis the groundhog eating a banana and discovered skunks are really cute when seen up-close.

Both Grand Cascades Lodge and Minerals Hotel have spas.  There’s a small 24-hour fitness center on the first floor with treadmills, ellipticals and other exercise equipment.  During our visit, I was suffering from some minor neck and shoulder pain, otherwise I would have participated in the Sunday morning yoga.

It’s important to note is that meals are not included in your stay.  However, there are several varied dining options at the two resorts.  My husband and I would have loved to dine at Restaurant Latour, the award-winning fine dining restaurant. With our kids in tow, this sadly wasn’t really an option for us.  We visited Kites Restaurant, located at the Minerals Hotel, for breakfast Saturday morning.  Although a shuttle between resorts is available, we opted to drive.

I believe I’ve mentioned how much my kids love breakfast!  Kites has a breakfast buffet, priced at $19.95 for adults and $9.95 for kids.  The buffet included the usual scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes and cereal.  Our favorites were the bagel and lox station and the pastries.  I overheard the hostess mention to another guest that they can make omelettes, but there was not a station and this was not otherwise stated anywhere.  As far as breakfast buffets go, this one was average but we left full and ready for a day of fun.

After breakfast we called to make dinner reservations at Crystal Tavern.  The only time available was 5:30 PM.  Since we ate breakfast so late, we opted to skip lunch and instead treated the kids to a Chocolate, Raspberry, Banana Gelato  Shake from the Biosphere Cafe.  This little cafe is located adjacent to the Biosphere pool and serves salads and sandwiches, in addition to scoops of gelato, shakes, smoothies and more. The staff members went above and beyond when my husband mentioned the kids were sharing the one shake. They split the shake in two cups, each with chocolate sauce, whipped cream and a striped paper straw!

We ate dinner at Crystal Tavern, located in the clubhouse at the Grand Cascades Lodge.  This family-friendly restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and offers children’s menus.  My kids opted not to order off the kid’s menu.  Instead, my son ordered the Smoked Salmon Toast ($12) which is an adult appetizer, but he had it for his main and my daughter had the CSR Burger with cheese ($19 +$2 cheese).  It’s a gigantic burger and was tasty but we opted not to add a fried egg for $4.  I enjoyed the Seafood Pasta ($28) and my husband had the Short Rib of Beef with manchego grits and garden succotash ($34).  Everything was delicious.

After our dinner, we headed back to the biosphere for movie night at the pool.  The kids watched a bit of Ice Age 2 from the pool (and I from the hot tub) and they also went back in the outdoor pool.  We finally headed back to the room to call it a night.

If you are looking for a relaxing, fun-filled weekend, Crystal Springs Resort is perfect.  It’s a great get-away for both families and couples, with enough activities to keep everyone entertained.   Even better, it’s only a short drive from Westchester County.

Five on Friday {Happy November}

Happy Friday!  The week has flown by and I’m so happy for the weekend! I am looking forward to “falling back” Saturday night.  But, I’m not looking forward to it being dark at 4:30 in the afternoon. This weekend is starting with dinner out tonight with our supper club for Hudson Valley Restaurant Week, a trip into the city with my son and then some mother-daughter bowling with my daughter on Sunday.  It’s looking to be a busy but fun weekend!  Here are five from this week:

1. Weekend Getaway – As I mentioned in last week’s post, our family had a little weekend getaway.  Crystal Springs Resort in Hamburg, New Jersey hosted us for the weekend.  I have a post coming soon on this beautiful resort.  After being so busy, it was nice to have a very relaxing weekend.  Most of our time was spent in the biosphere pool.  Between the indoor pool, water slide, jacuzzi and heated outdoor pool, we had such a great time.  And it’s so beautiful with all the plants and flowers!

36839879

2. Reading – I am currently reading Tear Me Apart by J.T. Ellison.  I just started reading this as my before bed book.  It’s in the thriller/suspense genre but so far it doesn’t seem like it.  This is my first J.T. Ellison read, but two of her other books have been on my to read list.

League of their own ver2.jpg

3. Watching – This week we watched the movie A League of Their Own with our kids.  After taking a recent trip to Cooperstown, my husband and I wanted to show them some baseball movies.  I remember watching this movie growing up.  It was fun to see it again and see the kids’ reactions to it.  My daughter said, “I liked that more than I thought I would!”  Plus, they got excited seeing the National Baseball Hall of Fame on screen, since we were just there.

4. Dinner Out – Hudson Valley Restaurant Week has started.  I rarely eat dinner out during the week because we are usually so busy.  This week it was fun to be able to dine out with a fellow foodie friend.  I introduced her to a local seafood restaurant that I love (can you love a restaurant if you have only been twice before?!).  During restaurant week, participating restaurants offer a three course dinner for $32.95.  I ordered this octopus dish for my main course.  Not only was it delicious, but how beautiful is it?!!

5. Halloween – I really dislike Halloween being on a weeknight!  After school we had a quick, early dinner.  Then we took the kids out trick-or-treating with their friends.  It always ends up being a late night, but they had a fun time…..and might have gotten a little bit of candy!

My son was an Overwatch Reaper.  For those of you unfamiliar, Overwatch is a video game that he’s into.  He’s far more into Fortnite…..but he couldn’t find a Fortnite costume so he went with this one.  And we may just have a few leaves in our yard!! LOL!!  My daughter was Simon from Alvin and the Chipmunks with two of her friends for the school dance and for the school day on Halloween.  Then she was Little Red Riding Hood at night for trick-or-treating.  My husband and I are not, and never were, one of those families where we all dress up.  I love seeing the family costumes on Pinterest and the Internet, but I hate getting dressed up!  Did you dress up for Halloween?

ICYMI this week on the blog:

Wednesday I wrote about our visit to Fly Creek Cider Mill.

Sharing with Friday Favorites!  Have a great weekend!

A Tasty Time at Fly Creek Cider Mill

When you are visiting Cooperstown, NY, you must take the short 15-minute drive to the Fly Creek Cider Mill.  The mill was established in 1856 and is currently owned and run by the Michaels family.

I recommend arriving to Fly Creek Cider Mill early, especially in the autumn peak season.  You might want to first visit the Mill Store Marketplace.  Depending on the time of day and season of your visit, you may be waiting on line to enter the store.  There’s a good reason for this: they want your in-store experience to be a good one and limiting the number of guests inside minimizes crowding. Rest assured, though, the line moves quickly and cider samples and fun facts entertain you while you wait.

The Marketplace is a foodie’s dream.  There are over 40 different samples that you can try from salsas and dips to doughnuts and cheese.  The apple room is stocked with up to 12 different varieties of apples that you can sample.

The kids especially loved sampling the many different types of fudge they make including Rocky Road, Carrot Cake, Toll House Cookie and more.

Fly Creek Cider Mill is a licensed New York State Farm Winery and bottles apple wines and hard ciders.  Samples of their wines and ciders are available in the marketplace.  I am a big fan of hard ciders and enjoyed both their Original and Apple-Raspberry varieties.

As you make your way through the Cider Mill you get to see the apple cider production up close on the second floor.  Apple pressing only takes place on weekends and the frequency of pressing is based on apple cider sales.  Over 20,000 gallons of cider are made each fall!  While we were visiting, the apples were in the process of being pressed and the juice collected. A gift shop that sells all kinds of items from mugs and decorative items to soaps, dishes and more is also on the top floor of the marketplace.  They have a large Christmas ornament selection as well.  If you run out of your favorite Fly Creek Cider Mill snacks and condiments after you return home, they have an online store where you can purchase more.

Make sure you leave room after all that sampling for lunch or an early dinner at the Snack Barn.  There are so many tasty meal and treat options available.  Our family enjoyed a late lunch and split the Pot Roast Sandwich ($13.99) and BBQ Pork Sandwich ($12.99) Value Combo Meal.  Both of these sandwiches were delicious and I highly recommend.

Each value meal comes with kettle-cooked chips, a beverage and a full-sized slice of pie.  We opted for the Apple Caramel Nut and Fruits of the Farm pie.  I’m not a big pie eater and I was devouring these!

We opted to upgrade our soft drink to a cider slush with one of our meals.  I had never seen or heard of a cider slush until our visit.  It was so good and I highly recommend.  It was sweet and refreshing, a perfect fall treat!

We enjoyed some live music while eating our lunch then we walked around the rest of the property.  Behind the mill is Millpond, home to lots of swans.  There are feed stands where you can purchase food for the swans and ducks.  Next to the Snack Barn is Tractor Land, a play area for younger kids.  For $1 you can purchase a rubber duck and participate in duck races.

A large collection of John Deere tractors and vintage equipment is on display throughout the property.  Make sure you take the short trip to Fly Creek Cider Mill when visiting Cooperstown, NY.  You are in for a tasty good time!

Five on Friday {Happy Halloween}

Happy Friday!  This week has flown by.  Sadly, I did not win the $1.6 billion mega millions……but life must go on.  This weekend we are having a relaxing getaway to Crystal Springs Resort.  Follow along on Instagram Stories to see all the fun!  Before we head out this evening, the kids are going to their school Halloween Bash.  Last weekend was a rush to get costumes, but my son is an Overwatch Reaper (a video game character – insert eye roll here) and my daughter is Simon from Alvin and the Chimpmunks, as a trio costume with two of her friends. I hope everyone has a fun time this Wednesday celebrating Halloween!  Here are five from this week:

1. Reading – I will hopefully be finishing up The Other  Woman, which I had posted about in last week’s Friday post.  I also started Next of Kin by James Tucker.  I don’t like reading multiple fiction books at one time, but this one was smaller than The Other Woman and fits in my purse better!  This is a mystery/thriller book that has been quick reading so far.

2.  Watching – I watched the movie The Book Club. It’s about a group of older women who decide to read Fifty Shades of Grey.  Unfortunately, I didn’t think it was that great.  Our family started watching The Carbonaro Effect on Netflix.  It’s a prankster, magic show that seriously has us all saying, “How did he do that?!” and laughing lots!

3. Cooking  – Saturday night was our monthly supper club.  This month’s theme was German.  Even though I chose the theme, we all didn’t think it would be that great.  We were thinking heavy dishes, lots of sausage, etc.  Surprisingly, this meal was delicious!  Like, one of our top ten meals delicious.  There was chicken schnitzel, stuffed beef roulade with gravy, spaetzle, bierocks (homemade brioche rolls stuffed with ground turkey and cabbage filling), cucumber salad and an apple sauerkraut slaw.  I made an apple strudel for dessert.  Just typing this is making my mouth water remembering how good this meal was!

4. Making Strides Walk – Sunday morning we got up early to take part in the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Breast Cancer Walk.  It was a super chilly day but we walked the 4.4 miles like champs!

5. Eating – Later that day we treated ourselves to this Peanut Butter and Chocolate “Out of This World” shake from our favorite local ice cream shop.  It was the final shake we tried for our Freak Shake post (see link below).  No worries, the four of us split this!
