NY Foodie Family’s 25 Books of Christmas

25-books-of-christmas

As a lover of both books and Christmas, over the next 25 days, I am presenting NY Foodie Family’s 25 Books of Christmas.  Every day from December 1 – 25 I am posting a Christmas book review.  Most of the books will be children’s picture books, however, there are some adult Christmas reads as well.  The majority of these books are also new releases and were published this year.  So, stay tuned tomorrow for day one of the 25 Books of Christmas!  Hopefully, one or all of the books will help get you into the holiday spirit!

Warwick Valley Bed and Breakfast

Warwick Valley Bed And Breakfast

Located in Warwick, New York, only about an hour’s drive from New York City is the Warwick Valley Bed and Breakfast.  Conveniently located in the historic district at 24 Maple Avenue, this bed and breakfast is housed in a restored Colonial that was built in the early 1900’s.

I recently visited this bed and breakfast with my husband, as a surprise weekend getaway to celebrate his 40th birthday.

Warwick Valley Bed and Breakfast

The bed and breakfast has seven different rooms to choose from.  Each room has a name and unique decor, with varying bed sizes and arrangements.  All rooms have a small seating area, a desk and a private bathroom.  Rates range from $144 to $229 a night, depending on the day and season.  Children are welcome at this bed and breakfast at an additional cost.

Reservations can be requested online and a confirmation e-mail will be sent to confirm your selected dates and price.  In our confirmation e-mail, Loretta, the Innkeeper also noted that she could help arrange appointments for massages or facials and make dinner reservations as well.

Back Entrance

When you pull into the driveway of the bed and breakfast there is ample parking around back.  You then enter through the back entrance.  The bed and breakfast has a no shoes policy.  Upon entering, there are shelves to store your shoes.  Slippers are available to wear.

Paisley Room

I booked the Paisley Room, which as you can see is named for the Paisley bedding.  This room has a Queen-sized bed and overlooks the back driveway.  It’s on the second floor, that is shared with two other rooms.

Sitting Area

I took Loretta up on her offer and had her arrange for an in-room massage for my husband as part of his birthday present. While he had his massage, I went down to the sitting area and read a book.

A benefit of staying at a bed and breakfast is that a homemade breakfast is included in the cost of your stay. There are two dining areas in the bed and breakfast.  We ate in the main dining room, pictured below.

Dining Area

We only stayed one night, so I’m unsure if the breakfast menu changes daily.

Breakfast

Loretta cooks everything herself in the kitchen adjacent to the dining room.  During our stay, breakfast began with a bowl of cinnamon-spiced fruit and nut mix.  We then had a choice of french toast, an omelet, or eggs cooked in any style of our choosing.  Sides included roasted butternut squash and bacon.  You could have any combination (or all!) of these breakfast options. I ordered the french toast with a side of bacon and butternut squash.  It was delicious!

I love that the Warwick Valley Bed and Breakfast is conveniently located in the historic district.  It is within reasonable walking distance to the nearby shops and restaurants.  The day of our arrival, the weather was beautiful and on our walk into town we discovered the Craft Beer Cellar and Taco Hombre.  The next morning we woke up to snow but still trekked back into town to check out the last weekend of the outdoor, local farmer’s market.

Iron Forge Inn

Saturday evening we had dinner at the nearby Iron Forge Inn.  This is a farm-to-table restaurant located in a revolutionary era home built in 1760.  Chef/owner Erik Johansen is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and provides a menu of Modern American cuisine that changes seasonally.  We had an amazing dinner and I highly recommend dining here!

On our way home we stopped at Woodbury Common Premium Outlets to enjoy some child-free shopping!  Other nearby attractions include Mountain Creek and the Warwick Drive-in Theater.  Several wineries including the Warwick Valley Winery & Distillery and Applewood Winery are nearby as well.

My husband and I enjoyed our stay at the Warwick Valley Bed and Breakfast.  It was great to get away to celebrate his birthday and we loved the town of Warwick.  This was a perfect parents only get-away, as we decided our children wouldn’t appreciate the history and architecture of the village, that we found so charming.  There is enough that we didn’t get to see and do that we’d like to make a return trip soon!

Food Buys & Tries {Volume 1}

I’m not into buying lots of “stuff.”  However, for me food doesn’t fall into the “stuff” category.  You buy it, you eat it and hopefully enjoy it and then it’s gone.  If you don’t like it, it’s not a big deal and you don’t have to buy it again. Food doesn’t clutter up the house and for the most part is reasonable in cost. I’m always on the lookout for new food products for the family to try.  For the first volume of Food Buys & Tries I tried to focus on more healthy choices. However, I do have to warn you that ice cream and kettle chips are high on our list of likes!

Brooklyn Bred Bistro Buns

Brooklyn Bred Bistro Buns (Country Potato) – My kids are not big sandwich eaters.  This can make packing lunch a challenge.  I saw these Brooklyn Bred Bistro Buns in the bread aisle of Shoprite and thought they looked interesting.  They are thin and soft.  I added some cold cuts and lettuce to the sandwich and both kids enjoyed their lunch.   These were $2.99 for a pack of 8.  Brooklyn Bred is a company based in Brooklyn.  I enjoy supporting New York made products and will be purchasing these again.

Verdict:  Buy.  Support made in New York products. Plus, they are really good!

dr. Praeger's Asian Veggie burgers

dr. Praeger’s Asian Veggie Burgers – I like a good veggie burger.  I especially like Asian veggie burgers since they tend to be really flavorful.  This burger was a good veggie burger.  It’s made with cooked brown rice, carrots, peas, broccoli and more.  I’m not a huge fan of ginger, which unfortunately is an ingredient in most Asian veggie burgers, this one included.  The taste of ginger in this burger was evident but not overwhelming.  I added a slice of cheese and some lettuce and it was enjoyable.  dr. Praeger’s is an independent, family-owned business, started by two heart surgeons. The company focuses on making great-tasting products with simple, whole ingredients.  Just a note, this burger was extremely soft.  I heated my burger in the toaster oven and it practically fell apart when I flipped it, as directed.  The burger can also be heated in the microwave or a skillet.

Verdict:  Buy if you like veggie burgers and Asian flavors.  This is a flavorful, but soft burger.

Froozer

Froozer Blue Aloha frozen fruit snacks – These frozen fruit tubes are just that, frozen fruit and veggies.  I bought the Blue Aloha variety that includes pineapples, grapes, bananas, blueberries and carrots.  There are six fruit tubes in a box and these are found in the frozen fruit section of the grocery store.  I like that there is no added sugar or preservatives in these bars.  My son made a face when he first tried this and stated that “it tastes weird.”  However, he did end up finishing it. I tried a taste of his and noticed the lack of sugar right away.  This snack was an adjustment for my kids who are used to eating sugary cereals and snacks.  However, I plan on buying these again and trying the other flavors, tropical sunset and strawberry bliss.  These fruit tubes are a good source of Vitamin A & C.  They will make a nice addition to our winter breakfast rotation when the kids get sick of eating apples, bananas and oranges!

Verdict: Buy.  Your kids will get fruit and veggies in a fun way.

Litehouse Caramel Dip

Litehouse Caramel Dip – My kids are big fruit eaters and come fall, apples are a staple in our house.  I bought this caramel dip on sale at Acme for $1 for us to try.  This dip is super sweet!  My kids enjoyed it, but they like anything sugary.  The dip is not thick and was sliding off the apple slices.

Verdict:  Skip.  My kids like to eat apples.  No need to complicate the process or give them unnecessary extra sugar.

Egg White & Turkey Sausage Breakfast Pockets

Sandwich Bros. of Wisconsin:  Egg White & Turkey Sausage Flatbread Pocket Sandwiches – Mornings are pretty crazy in our house.  Most mornings my daughter has to be out of the house by 6:55 to make a 7 AM club at her middle school.  These breakfast sandwiches are only half a pita and contain an egg white with cheese and turkey sausage.  Each box contains six individually wrapped sandwiches.  It only needs 75-85 seconds in the microwave to heat it up and it’s easily transportable (she can take it with her and eat it in the car if needed!).  My daughter really enjoys these.  I tried one with a little ketchup and thought it was okay.

Verdict:  Try if you can buy them on sale.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours!  We are fortunate to be spending this day down in Maryland with my family.  We are grateful for you, the readers of this little blog.  May you enjoy this day with your family and friends and reflect on all that you are grateful and thankful for.

Five On Friday {Big Birthday Weekend}

I am so happy that it’s Friday!  This week has been super busy and I’m exhausted!  No time for relaxing though. This is a big birthday weekend for my husband.  Tomorrow he turns the big 4-0!  We celebrated as a family back in October when we took our cruise to Canada.  However, I of course have something special planned.  Since he reads the blog I’m not going into any more detail yet! Here are five from this week:

Blue Mountain Reservation

1. Holiday Pictures – I don’t want to jinx it, but I think I’m actually on top of things in terms of the picture for our holiday cards!  If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve seen several pics of Blue Mountain Reservation, a local county park.  We recently found this gem of a park and have been geocaching there.  This lake and surrounding area is so beautiful that we went last weekend and took some pics, one of which we will hopefully use for our Christmas card picture!

Bowling

2. Mother-Daughter Bowling – Sunday my daughter and I went to a mother/daughter bowling event with our local Girl Scout community.  It was a fun time getting to spend time with the other moms and daughters.  My daughter and I made a friendly wager that the one with the lower score would have to treat the other to ice cream.  I bowled a 154 and won.  I picked up two gallons of Friendly’s ice cream that was on sale this past week for $3 and told her that would work for me.  The who family can enjoy ice cream for days for less than the cost of one sundae at an ice cream shop.

22840374                26247008

3. Reading – I just finished reading Never Ever by Sara Saedi.  It’s a YA retelling of Peter Pan that was really good!  I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series when it comes out.  I just started Truly Madly Guilty by Liane Moriarty.  I liked Big Little Lies and The Husband’s Secret.  I’ve heard mixed reviews of this one so I’m trying not to let that sway my opinion of it.  I am only on chapter 5 as of now but hoping to make a dent in it this weekend.

Book Fair

4. Volunteering – Most of this week was spent volunteering at my son’s elementary school book fair.  I enjoy anything involving books and it’s fun helping kids pick out books.  Last week I helped set it up and today I’ll be helping to pack it up.  Between household chores, errands and getting in gym time, I’ve had some long, busy days this week!

The Crown Title Card.jpg

5. Watching – I’ve been so busy this week that I haven’t had much time to watch a lot of television.  I watched the Real Housewives of Orange County reunion.  My husband and I also watched the first two episodes of the Crown.

ICYMI this week on the blog:
Monday I shared our weekly meal plan.
Tuesday I reviewed The Wishbone Wish, a children’s Thanksgiving chapter book.

I’m linking up with Tif, Andrea and April.  Have a great weekend!

Goodreads Summary:
On your mark, get set, Gobblers-a-Go-Go! Judy swears she’ll win the race for a Thanksgiving turkey (though Stink has his doubts) in this full-color Moody adventure.     The town’s annual Turkey Trot race and festival is coming up, and Judy and Stink are training to win. Judy has decided that she is going to take home the big prize: a fat, juicy turkey. They can taste it already: the moist turkey, the hot gravy, the savory stuffing, the cranberry sauce! Beep! Beep! Beep! That’s the sound of Stink’s Rapidfire Ultra XE611M25 stopwatch going off as Judy and Stink hop, crawl, and climb toward race day. But what if they don’t win a mouthwatering bird? What then? Flying turkey gizzards! Will the Moody family end up starving on T-day, like ye pilgrims of olde, or will Grandma Lou cook up a tasty Franksgiving solution?

Review:
I haven’t read many Thanksgiving themed chapter books in my time.  However, both my eight year-old son and I found this book to be very enjoyable.  Judy Moody and Stink are siblings that each star in their own series by Megan McDonald.  This is one of the few crossover books that feature them together.  In this book Judy is excited that she convinced her parents to travel to her grandmother’s house for Thanksgiving dinner after her school’s Thanksgiving festival.  This will be the first year that she gets to participate in the festivities, including a Turkey Trot, in which the winner receives a turkey.  Judy and Stink practice for the Triple Fun Relay with some minor mishaps along the way.  Does Judy win the race?  I enjoyed that McDonald presents a lot of factual information on a variety of topics to the reader in a way that doesn’t lose the flow of the story.  I learned more about Sarah Josepha Hale and her role in Thanksgiving.  And did you know that Jell-O is the official state snack food of Utah?!  This book has seven chapters with colorful illustrations.  The Wishbone Wish was a humorous and enjoyable holiday read!

Weekly Meal Plan {Week 56}

2016 Calendar

Here is another weekly meal plan to help inspire you with some dinner ideas.  Meal Planning helps ensure that my family has a healthy dinner every night.  It also helps keep food expenses down.  If you are new to meal planning, you can read more about my meal planning process.  Here is a look at what was on our menu this past week.

Chianti Braised Short Rib

Saturday:  My husband and I went out to dinner for Hudson Valley Restaurant Week (HVRW) with our supper club to Hudson House River Inn.  I enjoyed these Chianti Braised Short Ribs with Mushroom Risotto.

Spaghetti and Meatballs

Sunday:  One of my daughter’s favorite meals is spaghetti and meatballs.  My husband made some turkey meatballs and spaghetti for dinner and she was super happy!

Quick Chicken Minestrone

Monday: I made Quick Chicken Minestrone with French Bread with Cauliflower Cheese Sauce from Cooking Light, October 2016.  This recipe uses a rotisserie chicken which helps make it quick and easy.  However, my husband noted that this was basically chicken noodle soup.  There were no beans and minimal veggies.  I would not make the French Bread with Cauliflower Cheese Sauce again.  It was too much work with leftover bread and cauliflower and it didn’t taste that great.

One-Skillet Buffalo Chicken Lasagna

Tuesday:  I made One-Skillet Buffalo Chicken Lasagna from i heart eating.   I didn’t read the directions carefully and cooked the noodles separately instead of in the skillet with the chicken and veggies.  I just omitted adding the chicken broth and I drained the diced tomatoes.  This dish wasn’t too spicy and the kids were able to eat it.  It made a ton and we were eating this for days!

Shrimp Fajitas

Wednesday: We had shrimp fajitas and salad.  My daughter wanted to make dinner and pretty much made most of the dinner on her own, with me supervising.  We sauteed the peppers and onions and used Penzeys Fajita Seasoning.  Simple but tasty.

Thursday:  This is our busiest night of the week and this Thursday we had leftovers.  Since we often eat leftovers for lunches the next day, it’s rare that we have enough for dinner.  However, that One Skillet Buffalo Chicken Lasagna made enough that we were eating it for days!

Shrimp and Parmesan Grits

Friday:  My mom was in town and took the family out to dinner.  We went to Savannah’s Southern House where the kids enjoyed fried chicken and mashed potatoes.  I had shrimp with Parmesan grits and my husband had a BBQ platter with pulled pork and brisket.  Yum!

What is on your menu this week?

Pax Romana {HVRW Review}

pax-romana

I am a Hudson Valley Restaurant Week Grazer.  In exchange for posts about my HVRW experience, part of this meal may have been compensated.  However, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

This past Wednesday, I got the rare chance to have a lunch date with my husband.  Hudson Valley Restaurant Week (HVRW) ends this Sunday the 13th and I wanted to get another delicious three course meal in! Since my husband works in White Plains, we had several options for lunch.  We had heard good things about Pax Romana – homemade pasta and great pizza?  We had to try it!  The restaurant, which opened in February of this year, is located at 189 East Post Road in White Plains  in the former Taleggio space.

Pax Romana Dining Room

Pax Romana is open every day beginning at noon, serving both lunch and dinner.  Although they don’t take lunch reservations, the dining room  is spacious with lots of seating.   Be sure to leave room for some gelato, which you will see in the case on the left when you first enter the restaurant!

Dining Room

I enjoyed the casual modern decor of the restaurant including the graffiti wall and arched windows.  Vintage kitchen accessories were showcased on shelves, hung from the ceiling and decorated the walls.  Vases of fresh herbs were placed on each table.

Pax Romana HVRW menu

Pax Romana has one HVRW menu and serves the same dishes for both lunch and dinner.  The restaurant also has a regular $10 Pax Lunch menu, which my husband ordered from.  This menu includes a choice of soup, salad or fries with one of the listed entrees.  Before we even ordered, crispy, herbed bread sticks were placed on the table.

Risotto Ball

For my starter I ordered Suppli’e Olive Ascolane.  All menu items are listed in Italian and English.   This is a large, fried risotto ball with mozzarella cheese in the center.  It was served with four meat stuffed olives, also fried.  I enjoyed this appetizer a lot, which I shared with my husband.

Pureed Cauliflower Soup

My husband ordered the soup of the day as part of his lunch special.  The soup, Zuppa de Cavolfiore, is the same pureed cauliflower soup offered on the HVRW menu.  This soup was smooth and creamy.

Macaroni with Pork Rib and Sausage Ragu

For his entree my husband ordered the Maccheroni cor Ragu de Sarsiccia e Spuntature – macaroni with pork rib and sausage ragu.  This pasta dish is also offered on the HVRW menu.  He wanted to try the homemade pasta and this dish stood out to him.  It was flavorful, hearty and filling!

Pinsa Margherita

For my entree I ordered the Pinsa Margherita.  Pax Romana is the only restaurant in New York that directly imports Pinsa Romana flour directly from Rome, which they use to make their pizza.  This pizza had a light, crispy crust.  With just san marzano tomatoes, mozzarella and fresh basil, this pizza proves that good quality, simple ingredients can make a delicious dish.

Nutella Doughnut

My husband’s lunch special did not come with dessert.  However, the Nutella Bombolone, a Nutella-filled Italian doughnut, was big enough for the two of us to share.  This doughnut is stuffed with Nutella and was a sweet ending to our meal.

Overall, we had a great lunch at Pax Romana during HVRW.  The servings were generous in size and delicious in taste.  Service was friendly and attentive.  We will have to return and try the gelato since we didn’t take our own advice and had no room for the extra dessert!

October Six-Pack

October Six-Pack

The monthly six-pack gives my husband and I a chance to sample some new-to-us beer and ciders.  The October six-pack has a pumpkin beer theme, perfect for fall.  Since many of the beers and ciders featured below are seasonal, they may not all be available now.  Here is a review of October’s six-pack:

Blue Moon Harvest Pumpkin Ale

Blue Moon:  Harvest Pumpkin Ale –  Harvest Pumpkin Ale was first created by Blue Moon in 1995 under the name Pumpkin Ale and was the first pumpkin ale available nationally.  This ale is crafted with pumpkin and spices including cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and allspice.  My husband didn’t think this beer had much pumpkin flavor.  However, I had a taste and could definitely pick up hints of the spices.

Harvest Patch Shandy

Leinenkugel’s: Harvest Patch Shandy – This is a wheat beer blended with natural pumpkin spice flavor including notes of nutmeg, allspice and clove.  My husband could taste the distinct flavors of pumpkin spice in this beer.  However, a shandy usually refers to a beer mixed with a soft drink or juice.  This beer had neither so the name was a bit confusing.  My husband has enjoyed other beers from Leinenkugel’s but this one wasn’t his favorite.

New Belgium Pumpkick

New Belgium:  Pumpkick –  This beer is only available from August through October, so you may not be able to find it in stores anymore.  This is a seasonal ale brewed with pumpkin juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice with additional flavors of cranberry juice and lemongrass.  My husband found this beer to be very flavorful.  He could taste the not so subtle notes of pumpkin pie flavor.  Overall, he gives this beer two thumbs up!

Samuel Adams 20 Pounds of Pumpkin

Samuel Adams:  20 Pounds of Pumpkin – This is a new seasonal ale from Samuel Adams.  It’s brewed with pumpkin and spices including cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg, giving it according to my husband, “a dark and spicy flavor.”  My husband found this beer to be very enjoyable.  However, he and I both agreed there was absolutely NO pumpkin flavor to it.

Smith & Forge Hard Cider

Smith & Forge Hard Cider – This cider is produced in Memphis, Tennessee and is made with five varieties of Washington State apples.  I found this cider to be sweet and very apple-y tasting, which I liked.  I prefer sweet ciders over dry ones and this one was perfect.

Woodchuck Amber

Woodchuck Hard Cider:  Amber –Woodchuck Cider is crafted in Middlebury, Vermont.  Amber is the company’s original cider, which means that this is the cider that I was probably drinking back in college!  This cider has a great apple taste that isn’t too dry.

Hudson House River Inn {HVRW Review}

hudson-house-river-inn

I am a Hudson Valley Restaurant Week Grazer.  In exchange for posts about my HVRW experience, part of this meal may have been compensated.  However, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

This past Saturday my husband and I dined at Hudson House River Inn, with two other couples, for Hudson Valley Restaurant Week (HVRW).  This historic inn is located at 2 Main Street on the waterfront in the picturesque town of Cold Spring.

Hudson House River Inn

The inn was built in 1832  and in 1982 was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.  It has 11 guest rooms and 2 suites for overnight stays.  There are two dining areas, the Tavern, for more casual dining, and the main dining room, the River Room, which is where we dined.  The River Room has a veranda that offers outdoor seating with amazing views of the Hudson River.  While a bit chilly for November, this would make for a great dining experience in warmer weather!

Executive chef John Guererro leads the culinary team at the Hudson House River Inn.  The restaurant normally specializes in steak and seafood, with poultry, pork and vegetarian options as well.

Dinner Menu

For HVRW Hudson House River Inn serves both lunch and dinner, with different menus for each.

Cocktails

The restaurant had an extensive cocktail menu, which our group sampled.  My husband had a Maker’s Old Fashioned while I had a Watermelon Margarita.  Before we even ordered, bread baskets were placed on the table with dishes of tomato and bean bruschetta.

Appetizers

For starters I had the Homemade Maryland Crab Cakes and my husband had the Lobster Bisque.  Three crab cake balls were served with a dijon mustard sauce for dipping.  The crab cakes were crispy on the outside and sweet and flavorful on the inside.  The bisque was smooth and creamy.  These starters turned out to be our favorite parts of the meal.

Chianti Braised Short Rib

For our main dishes I ordered the Chianti Braised Short Ribs and my husband had the Coriander Seared Sashimi Tuna.   The short rib was tender and flavorful, topped with caramelized onions and Maytag bleu cheese.  I enjoyed the mushroom risotto that accompanied the short ribs as well.  However, I found the carrots and string beans to be unexciting.

Seared Tuna

My husband ordered his tuna rare and was surprised to get a piece of fish that was well done around the edges and pink in the middle. It’s possible that his dish had a stop at the heat lamp as the kitchen looked quite busy. His tuna was topped with crab meat accompanied by wasabi mashed potatoes.  His dish also came with the same uninspired vegetables.

Hudson House River Inn - Dessert

There are only two dessert options, Bourbon Chocolate Pecan Pie and New York Style Pumpkin Cheesecake.  We of course had to try them both!  The cheesecake, topped with fresh whipped cream, was good but not memorable.  I preferred my husband’s chocolate pecan pie that was served with Maple Walnut Ice Cream. It was much more unique and flavorful.

The dining room was full throughout our entire dinner.  My husband and I were part of a group of six diners.  Unfortunately, the extra-long rectangular table set up, paired with the poor acoustics of the room, made for difficult conversation.  Our server Tara was friendly and attentive.  Dessert service was slow, which Tara apologized for, but fortunately, our group wasn’t in a rush.

Overall, we had a nice dining experience at the Hudson House River Inn for HVRW.  I’d love to come back in the spring or summer when it’s hopefully not as busy and I can eat out on the veranda.
