October 2016 Reads

Life According to Steph

Today I’m joining Steph and Jana’s monthly Show Us Your Books linkup to share my October 2016 reads.  October wasn’t a great reading month for me.  I only read seven books, which is on the low end for me.  Recently, I’ve been struggling with finding time to read.  I have books that I want to read, but I’ve only been reading in snippets  – a few minutes in the car while waiting to pick up the kids from after school activities, a few chapters before bed, etc.  There’s just so many other distractions.  Darn you Netflix!  Add in podcast listening, magazine reading, cooking, cleaning and the whole parenting thing and reading has been relegated to the bottom of my list of things to do.  November is not off to a great start either, but I’m hoping my reading time will pick up soon!  Here’s my October 2016 reads, ordered by rating.

Only Daughter by Anna Snoekstra – A young woman pretends to be Bec Winter, a girl who disappeared back in 2003.  Bearing enough resemblance to Bec, the girl thinks that this will give her a fresh start.  But soon she discovers that it’s difficult impersonating someone she doesn’t know, especially when her family is acting very strange.  The woman realizes that whoever took Bec may still be out there. This book is a psychological thriller and is a quick read.  I read that the movie rights have been sold for this book.  This might be a rare occasion where I like the movie better than the book.  I didn’t connect to or find any of the characters likable.  Plus, I found the whole premise that this woman could impersonate someone and no one questions it so unbelievable.

Anne & Henry by Dawn Ius – This YA book is a modern retelling of the story of King Henry VIII and Ann Boleyn.  The story takes place at Medina Academy in Washington, where Henry is President of the student council and dating Catherine.  But then Anne shows up and he becomes infatuated with her.  Romance ensues but things don’t end well.  Ever since reading Philippa Gregory’s historical fiction books, I’ve enjoyed reading about the Tudor period. I didn’t find this retelling enjoyable and the ending of the book was infuriating.  However, it may be a fun read for a high schooler, who is learning about the Tudor era.

It’s Not Me, It’s You by Stephanie Kate Strohm – This is a recent contemporary YA release.  You can read my full review of the book on the Kiss The Book blog.

13151

London Bridges by James Patterson – This is the 10th book in Patterson’s Alex Cross series.  Somehow I missed reading this one when reading this series.  It’s a quick, suspenseful read but nothing special.

162085

Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard – I was on a YA kick this month!  I finally read this first book in the Pretty Little Liars series.  If I was in high school I think I’d really like this series.  As an adult I think it was an okay read.  It has high school drama as well as some mystery and suspense.  Though not in a huge rush, I’m probably going to continue with the series.  I watched the first episode of the show on Netflix and it followed the book pretty well.

25324116

Private Paris by James Patterson & Mark T. Sullivan – This is the 10th book in the Private series, featuring Jack Morgan and his private, worldwide investigative firm.  I recently realized that I skipped some of the books in the series and have been trying to go back and read the ones that I’ve missed.  I find this series to be hit or miss and this book was just okay.  It fit my need for a quick, suspenseful book though.

The Girl Before by Kena Olsen -The only life Clara Lawson has known has been the one she’s lived with Mama and Papa G and her husband Glen.  Her husband took over his father’s business and Clara’s job was to groom and teach the new girls in preparation for their later life with clients.  But then their home is invaded and Clara is taken away and separated from Glen.  Institutionalized, she is questioned about her husband’s activities.  As information is revealed to her, Clara eventually starts to question the life she has lived and who she really is.  Told in alternating chapters between the past and present, this book was a bit on the disturbing side but engrossing.

Weekly Meal Plan {Week 55}

2016 Calendar

I hope everyone had a great weekend.  We had a great weekend.  The weather was a bit chilly but sunny.  My son had his last soccer game of the season.  My daughter enjoyed some time “hanging out” at her friend’s house.  My husband and I enjoyed a dinner out with friends.  Plus, with the time change, we got an extra hour of sleep.  This week the kids have Election Day and Veteran’s Day off from school.  My son gets an additional day off for Parent-Teacher Conferences.  So, this week I don’t have to worry too much about quick and easy meals on our meal plan.  Here is a look at what was on our menu this past week:

Shredded Pork Nachos

Sunday – I cooked a pork shoulder in the slow cooker.  My husband then shredded it later that night and made BBQ Pork Nachos.  He put the pork along with red onion and cheese on tortilla chips.  We love nachos for dinner!

Shredded Pork Burritos

Monday – Monday was Halloween.  Dinner had to be quick and easy so the kids could go out trick-or-treating with friends.  I made Pork Burritos using the leftover pork from Sunday night’s nachos.  I added the pork with cooked rice, black beans and shredded cheese in a large tortilla and then heated it up in a skillet.

Breaded Fish

Tuesday  – We had some leftover fish in the freezer that we had caught on a chartered fishing trip over the summer.  I breaded and fried the fish and served it along with some roasted potatoes and broccoli.  The kids love breaded fish and this dinner was enjoyed by all.

Roasted Red Pepper Soup

Wednesday – I made Roasted Red Pepper and Ricotta Soup from Cooking Light, April 2016.  I also made a Beer Cheese Bread to eat with it.  This soup was quick and easy to make.  Instead of mixing the ingredients in a blender first, I put everything in the sauce pan and used my immersion blender.  This saved time and clean up!  Both kids ate this soup but weren’t huge fans.  However, I enjoyed it a lot!

Slow Cooker Beef Stew

Thursday – I made Slow Cooker Beef Stew from Damn Delicious.  I’ve made beef stew in the slow cooker before, but this was a new to me recipe.  This recipe required a little bit of prep in the beginning, including searing the beef.  Thursday afternoons are super busy for us.  I can spend the time in the morning prepping the slow cooker but there isn’t time in the evening for cooking.  So, this recipe worked for us.  I found this recipe to be just okay in flavor.  The kids enjoy beef stew and my daughter had seconds of this.  I’ll continue to make beef stew but not this recipe.

Ham and Cheese Pizza

Friday – We had our weekly homemade pizza.  However, this week I only made Ham and Cheese Pizza from Cooking Light, October 2016.  I knew this was a pizza that the kids would eat and I had enough ingredients to make two.  The recipe called for deli ham but my ham was cut too thin and dried out.  I’d recommend dicing up a ham steak.  The mix of cheeses and the ham made the pizza a bit salty but I liked the addition of the apple to add some sweetness.

What is on your menu this week?

Five on Friday {Welcome November}

Happy Friday!  This week has been a super busy one for us.  It started off with a busy and late Halloween on Monday night.  Wednesday evening my son had basketball evaluations for the upcoming season.  Last night I went to my son’s parent-teacher conference.  Add in play dates, before and after school activities, homework, errands, etc. and it was nonstop!  This weekend my son has his last soccer game of the season and my husband and I are going out to dinner with our Supper Club.   Otherwise, as of now, the rest of the weekend should be pretty low-key.  Here are five from this week:

Halloween Candy

1.Halloween – As the kids get older, it’s become necessary for my husband and I to “divide and conquer.”  They each have their own friends who they want to trick-or-treat with.  So, I went with my daughter, dressed as Greek Goddess, and my husband went with my son, dressed as a Rogue One Death Trooper.  LOTS of candy was collected and they both had a fun evening.  Unfortunately, it was also a late evening….and a Monday. So, not a great way to start a busy week off.  I might have had to deal with some tired, cranky kids this week!

28187230

2. Reading – Unfortunately, I can’t say that I’ve read anything good recently.  I just started reading The Woman in Cabin 10.  I’m in the mood for a good suspenseful read and hope this one fits the bill.

3. Watching – Sadly, I cannot say that I watched the World Series.  I’m not a big fan of watching sports on television, but enjoy watching them in person.  However, my husband watched the games and also had some late nights this week!  This week I watched the Amanda Knox documentary on Netflix.  It was very enlightening.  When this story first broke out in the media, I really wasn’t following it.  So, this was an insightful documentary for me, getting the whole story now that it is over and she was finally acquitted.

Blue Mountain Reservation

4. Family Fun – Last Saturday was a beautiful day.  In the afternoon, the family headed out to Blue Mountain Reservation to do some geocaching.  We got to enjoy this beautiful view after doing some minor rock climbing to get up to the cache.  We got some great exercise in and got to enjoy one of the last beautiful fall days.

Seared Scallop

5. Eating – Tuesday started Hudson Valley Restaurant Week.  My friend and I had lunch at Purdy’s Farmer & The Fish, a local farm-to-table seafood restaurant.  I got to enjoy this seared scallop appetizer for my first course.  It was soooo good!

Purdy’s Farmer & The Fish {HVRW Review}

purdys-farmer-and-the-fish

I am a Hudson Valley Restaurant Week Grazer.  In exchange for posts about my HVRW experience, part of this meal may have been compensated.  However, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Hudson Valley Restaurant Week (HVRW) started this past Tuesday.  From November 1 – 13, hundreds of restaurants throughout the Hudson Valley are offering a three-course prix-fixe menu.  I started HVRW off with a bang yesterday when I ate lunch at Purdy’s Farmer & The Fish.  The restaurant is located on Titicus Road in North Salem, right off of I-684.

Purdy's Farmer & The Fish

The restaurant is located in an 18th century house. When I arrived I got a quick peek at the inside dining area.  Although small, it has a quaint and cozy feel. Since the weather was so beautiful, my dining partner, fellow blogger, Ashley at Big Flavors From a Tiny Kitchen, and I opted to sit outside on the porch.

The Farm

Purdy’s Farmer & The Fish is a farm-to-table seafood restaurant run by Executive Chef, Michael Kaphan and Chef de Cuisine, Kevin O’Neil.  More than 3/4 of the vegetables used in their dishes are grown on the four acre farm located next to the restaurant.  The seafood used in the restaurant is provided exclusively by Down East Seafood. The company is committed to sustainability and the environment and its founder, Edward Taylor is also co-founder of the restaurant.  Adjacent to the restaurant is the Farm Shop where you can purchase fresh seafood and produce grown on the farm.  Local grass-fed meats and goods from other local vendors including pasta and cheese are also available for purchase in the shop.

Purdy's Farmer & The Fish Restaurant Week Menu

Purdy’s Farmer & The Fish offers a lunch menu only for HVRW.  While the restaurant week menu isn’t posted on the Valley Table participating restaurants page, it’s available on the restaurant’s website.  For $20.95, you get a choice of a First Course, Main Course and Dessert.

Seared Scallop

I highly recommend the seared scallop for the first course.  The scallop was cooked well and paired nicely with the slight chewiness of the faro.  Add in the sweetness from the dried fruit and butternut puree and this was an explosion of flavor.

Grilled Salmon Banh MI

For my main course, I ordered the Grilled Salmon Banh MI.  The salmon rested on a layer of edamame puree and was topped with a kimchee spread and pickled veggies.  This was all sandwiched between a medium-sized roll.  I loved all the Asian flavors of this sandwich!  It was served with a mixed greens salad, which I didn’t eat very much of. I was getting full and had to leave room for dessert!

Pumpkin Cheesecake

Speaking of dessert, I ordered the Pumpkin Cheesecake.  The cheesecake was creamy with noticeable pumpkin flavor but wasn’t overly sweet.  It was the perfect ending to a delicious meal.

I was surprised at how busy the restaurant was at lunch time on a Wednesday afternoon.  Despite the filled tables on the porch, our server Lindsey was friendly and attentive.

I enjoyed a delicious lunch here and I highly recommend visiting Purdy’s Farmer and The Fish during HVRW!

If you can’t make it for HVRW, the restaurant offers a nice variety of fish and seafood dishes for lunch and dinner.  Clams, Alaskan Crab Legs and a variety of oysters are some of the goodies available from the raw bar.  Burgers and fried chicken are some non-seafood options. The owners recently opened Gramercy Farmer & The Fish in New York City, creating dishes using fresh fish and produce from the Purdy’s farm.  Later this month, sister restaurant Hudson Farmer & The Fish will be opening in Sleepy Hollow, adding to the Westchester County restaurant scene.

Currently November 2016

Happy November!   We enjoyed trick-or-treating on Halloween earlier this week and before we know it we’ll be celebrating Thanksgiving! I cannot believe how quickly time is flying by.   I am joining Anne and her co-host Catherine for the monthly Currently linkup.  This month I am currently:

Discovering – the benefits of working out.  I’ve been going to the gym regularly for almost two months now.  While I don’t see a lot of physical changes yet, I feel stronger and more fit.  I’m enjoying the classes that I’ve been taking, which definitely helps keep me motivated.

40

Celebrating – my husband’s 40th birthday!  He turns 40 on November 19th.  Our family went on a cruise last month as an early birthday celebration.  However, we have to celebrate on his actual birthday!

Trees

Starting – to think about preparing for the holidays.  Notice how I said I’m starting to think about.  Nothing is actually started yet.  I haven’t started holiday shopping, a menu isn’t planned, outfits aren’t purchased ….I’m not that good! However, I’m hoping to get the kids to make their wish lists soon and get started on planning our Christmas cards.  Baby steps!

Jeans

Wearing – When I’m not wearing workout clothes, I’m wearing jeans and long-sleeve shirts and boots.  I haven’t broken out the sweaters yet, but it won’t be long now!

Googling – Hudson Valley Restaurant Week just started yesterday.  I love being able to enjoy three course lunches and dinners at local restaurants for $20.95/$29.95.  I’ve been googling restaurants and menus to try to plan out a couple of lunches and dinners.  I have a lunch and a dinner planned for this week already, but would like to get in another lunch or dinner sometime next week.
