Happy in January

Happy in January

I started 2016 with my one little word for the year being “happy.”  One month in and I feel like I’ve been doing a pretty good job of embracing happiness.  Here is a recap of January:

Things I read:
10 Simple Things to Make You Happier At Home – I realized that I did most of these things already.  I have always made our bed every morning and am trying to get my kids in the routine of making their beds on their own.

Your Happiest Year Yet! from the January/February 2016 Everyday with Rachael Ray.  You don’t have to tell me twice to eat more chocolate and cheese!

Eight books this month and most of them were really good!  Check out my February 9th post when I join Steph and Jana’s Show Us Your Books Link-up and review my January reads!

Things I listened to:
Happier with Gretchen Rubin Podcast – I’ve listened to all four January episodes (46-49).

Things I did:
The kids helped me work on our scrapbook from our Bermuda cruise that we took back in September of 2014!  Yes, I was really behind.  I really want to work on our Disney scrapbook from this past summer, but wanted to get the Bermuda cruise book finished first.  As much as I don’t have a lot of time to scrapbook, I am trying to do it more since the kids love looking at them and remembering the fun experiences that they’ve had.

Wrote in my Instant Happy Journal.  I still don’t write in this every night, but I do like to reflect on the positives  of my day before going to bed.

Volunteered two Saturdays this month at the food pantry.  Due to bad weather, and some other plans, I was only able to get to the food pantry twice this month.  However, I was able to spend the whole three hours, helping with set up and shopping.

Had a dinner date with a friend who I hadn’t seen in months.  I also reconnected with an old friend from college.  It had been two years since we had last seen each other.  We met up for lunch last weekend and it was so nice to catch up and see each other.

Things I am looking forward to:
Our family February Minimalist Challenge!  It is time to declutter and get rid of “stuff.”

Things I need to work on:
Exercising more.  Besides my weekly tennis league, I haven’t been getting much exercise.  I need to find some motivation and just do it.  Up first is yoga!

Tuesday Tips and Try-Its {Week 1}

Tuesday Tips

1. Today is Groundhog Day.  If the groundhog sees his shadow it is predicted that winter weather will last for six more weeks.   Since I hate the cold weather, I’m hoping for an early spring.  When was the last time you watched the movie Groundhog Day?  I’m not sure that I’ve ever seen the entire movie so I’m giving it a try.  If you’re a big fan, you may want to watch it again in preparation for its 2017 Broadway musical debut.  Most of the creative team of the Broadway hit Matilda are behind the anticipated March 2017 Groundhog Day musical debut.

2. Give your sponge a 1-2 minute zap in the microwave every day.  According to this article, your kitchen sponge is one of the dirtiest things in your house!

3. Sunday, February 7 is Super Bowl 50.  You can watch the Carolina Panthers vs. the Denver Broncos, or just watch for the commercials and half-time show like I do!  Regardless, the day is all about the snacks!  Check out this collection of recipes, drinks and crafts to help celebrate the big game!

4. Have a family game night!  Recent family favorites of ours include Bounce-Off and Life.  This is probably what I will be doing with the kids while we stream the game!

5.  Make one meatless meal this week.  We aim to have at least one vegetarian meal on our menu plan each week.  These Slow Cooker Lentil and Brown Rice Tacos are a family favorite.  And they’re made in the slow cooker!  So easy and tasty!

February Minimalist Challenge

February Minimalist Challenge

I first heard about the Minimalists, Joshua Fields Millburn & Ryan Nicodemus, on the Enjoying Life on a Budget podcast with Mark & Lauren Greutman (Episode 054, December 9).   With “happy” being my focus for the year, I realized that having a clean, organized house makes me happy.  As much as I try to keep the house organized though it never stays that way.  Why?  Because we have too much “stuff.”  So I went to the Minimalists site and discovered the 30-Day Minimalism Game.   The gist of the “game” is that on day 1 you get rid of one thing, day 2, two things, and so-on until on day 30 you have gotten rid of thirty things!  I was so on board with this and decided I would start this challenge on February 1st.  I told the rest of the family about the challenge and decided that they were going to participate with me.  We would ALL be getting rid of “stuff.”  You can start this challenge anytime, however, I thought it would be easier to keep track by starting on the first of a month.  Since there are only 29 days in February, we will technically only be doing a 29-day challenge.

I recently read The Life-Changing Method of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo.  I may be in the minority, but I wasn’t a huge fan of this decluttering book.  I can’t get on board with talking to my things and thanking them.  The major take-away from the book that stood out to me was only keeping the things that “spark joy.”  This idea is going to be the driving force of our decluttering challenge.

Ultimately, my goal for this challenge is to have a cleaner, more organized home.

So, stay tuned for updates as our family embarks on this decluttering, minimalism challenge.  Even better, why don’t you join us and take on this challenge yourself!

Family Foodie Fun: Medieval Times

Medieval Times

Are you looking for something fun and different to do with your family?  If so, you might want to think about visiting Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament.  To celebrate my birthday, I like to find a fun experience that the family can enjoy together.  Last year, we surprised the kids with a trip to Medieval Times at the Lyndhurst, New Jersey location.  There are eight locations throughout the United States and one location in Canada.   We chose a 5 PM dining time, though on Saturdays they host a 2 PM and an 8 PM show as well.  They had no idea where we were going and were surprised when we arrived at the castle (yes, the building looks like a castle!).  The parking lot was large and parking is free.

The castle opens 75 minutes prior to your show time.  We arrived about an hour before the show, as seats are assigned on a first come, first serve basis.  We waited on a short line upon entering the building.  They do try to have you upgrade your ticket, if you have a general admission ticket, like we did.  After checking your tickets, you are assigned to a knight and a horse and given a crown in the corresponding color.  There are six different colored knights that you can cheer on and we were assigned to the blue knight.  We then had our picture taken with the King and Princess before entering the Hall of Arms.  You can later purchase the photo for a hefty price.

Hall of Arms

Depending on how early you arrive, you may be waiting in the Hall of Arms for awhile.  In this beautifully decorated hall there is a bar where you can purchase drinks (served in souvenir cups)and many different vendors where you can purchase all kinds of (expensive) Medieval-themed souvenirs.  We purchase a Christmas ornament on all of our family outings, but unfortunately they didn’t sell any.  So, we ended up buying a key chain that my husband turned into an ornament for our tree.

Intro before we enter the arenawas

After waiting a bit, we were then ushered into the Grand Ceremonial Arena.  Each colored section has several rows of seating.  Each row of tables faces the arena, with the first couple of rows reserved for the Royalty and other upgraded ticket packages.   After being seated, our server, dressed in Medieval attire, started serving the 4-course dinner.

Menu

The meal begins with tomato bisque, garlic bread, roasted chicken, a BBQ spare rib and an herbed-basted potato.  They served an apple turnover for dessert. Since this is Medieval Times, and silverware didn’t exist back then, you are required to drink your soup and eat the rest of your meal with your hands!

Tomato Bisque

Let me note that there is a ton of food.  The food is decent and better than expected.  There is no distinction between a child’s meal and an adult meal.  They do give take home containers, which we needed, to bring home any uneaten food.  And a wet napkin is provided after eating to clean your hands.  At the time of our visit, our waiter was friendly and polite, but definitely busy.

While you are eating the two hour show begins.  The six knights perform in different feats of showmanship and competition. As noted earlier, we were cheering on the blue knight.

Blue Knight

If your colored knight is successful during the showmanship games, he wins flowers to throw out to his colored section.  After the games a net goes up around the arena and the knights engage in jousting and weaponry battles.   There is a story line with an evil villain and one knight is declared the winner, which on our evening was sadly not the blue knight!  During the show you will also see falconry and a horsemanship, including a choreographed dance and performance.  I will note that the whole show is choreographed, including the jousting and weaponry battles.  Our son, six at the time, noted that the fighting looked fake, but enjoyed it nonetheless.

General admission tickets for Medieval Times at Lyndhurst Castle in New Jersey (where we went) currently cost $62.95 for adults and $36.95 for children under 12.  Royalty packages and above cost additional.  However, there are often specials through the site.  While the tickets are a bit pricey, dinner is included in the cost as well as the live show.  The family seated in front of us had purchased an upgraded package and received a Commemorative Program (featured below) and a small ribbon flag that you can wave during the show.  They kindly gave two of the programs and flags to our children, noting that their family did not need them all.

Medieval Times Program and Crown

The family had a great time visiting Medieval Times.  This was definitely something new and different for us to experience together as a family and something I recommend families try at least once, if given the opportunity!

One Little Word

Word of the year

I’ve never had a word of the year before.  However, I really felt like I needed one this year.  2015 had its shares of ups and downs and I am hoping that 2016 will be better.  So, for my word of the year I chose HAPPY.  Don’t get me wrong, this is not to say that I am or have been unhappy.  I just think there’s always room to be happier and I really want to be intentional about it this year.  Only five days into the new year and I’ve already seen the impact of me embracing this word.  After I told my daughter about my word of the year a couple of days ago and my quest to be happy she noted, “You have been calm these past few days!”  For me HAPPY includes:

not sweating the small stuff.

being content with and appreciating what I have.

eating healthier and exercising more.

not comparing myself to others.

doing more of the things that make me feel that way.

saying no.

helping my husband to build his business.

celebrating the little things.

not letting the kids stress me out.

working to achieve my goals.

getting enough sleep.

organizing and decluttering.

looking on the bright side.

doing things to make other family members happy.

This list is not all encompassing and right now seems like a lot.  But I’m taking baby steps and using “happy”as a guide and motivator.  I am becoming more aware of my actions and words especially around my husband and kids.  The other evening, instead of me yelling at the kids when they weren’t doing what they were supposed to be, which is what I normally would do, I sent my husband to deal with it!  Ha!  This allowed me to be able to talk to them in a calm voice later.  I told them about my word of the year and my attempt to embrace “happy.”  My husband doesn’t think that I will last a week in my quest for happiness.  Challenge on!  But, he’s really supportive of me in my endeavor, since he and we all know the saying, “happy wife, happy life!”

I also recommended (made) my husband choose a word of the year.  He chose “success.”

Success

Weekend Chef here.  “SUCCESS” is a relative word, not only for the person using it but also can be redefined for that same person through time. Success for me, for today, will look different for me next year. And the year after that. I started my own business a month ago. Initially, success means the ability to pay the regular monthly bills. Big picture stuff here. However, you can’t get to the big goal without a bunch of little actions along the way. The real goals are attainable in small bites. I read a great blog post recently over at Primer Magazine on “How to Be Awesome Every Hour of the Day“. It’s a bit of inspiration to be your best and exceed expectations for an hour. And then to do it for an hour after that. If done correctly, you just keep on doing an hour of awesome at a time nonstop. To overcome challenges for an hour, despite the couch calling to you longingly. Despite the easy way out. Despite the negativity that sometimes surrounds us. To stay motivated.

So success is taking the risk of a new business venture and giving it my all, despite the chance of failure. Sure, I strive to be the best  in my field but that will come with time. I’ll take my success one hour at a time and I’ll see how things look when I turn around at the end of 2016 and look back. I know I’ve done my best to make dreams a reality.

Top Posts of 2015

Mocha Snickerdoodles

It’s hard to believe that today is the last day of 2015.  Tomorrow, NY Foodie Family turns one!  This has been such a fun year of blogging and I am looking forward to many more to come!  Throughout this first year, the blog has slowly evolved.  This was first a food focused blog but throughout the year has turned into more of a family lifestyle blog.  Don’t get me wrong, we still love food!  However, we also love so many other things as well!  Books, games, family fun and new experiences are also things that we enjoy.  It’s much more fun being able to share all of that with you here on the blog.  As the new year approaches I am looking into giving the blog a new look.  Stay tuned for lots more food, family and fun here at NY Foodie Family.

As I noted, this blog started out as a food focused blog.  This was evident in the most popular posts on the blog this year. Based on page views, the following are the top five most viewed posts of 2015.

Awesome Egg Rolls

5. Awesome Egg Rolls – Last February, we celebrated Chinese New Year by making a variety of different dishes, including these egg rolls.  This was our first time making egg rolls and the kids had fun helping us make these.

Mocha Snickerdoodles

4. Mocha Snickerdoodles – The cookie dough for these cookies has to be chilled for at least an hour, but otherwise, these are easy to make and really tasty!

Slow Cooker Loaded Potato Soup

3. Slow Cooker Loaded Potato Soup – This soup is perfect for the cold weather that we’ve finally been experiencing here in New York.  This soup has all the flavors of a loaded baked potato, but in soup form.  And it’s made in the slow cooker!

2. A Peek Inside our Meal Planning Process – We are a meal planning family.  It keeps our grocery bill on budget and also saves us from the “It’s 5:30 PM, what are we having for dinner?”  dilemma.  In this post, I outlined what exactly goes into our meal planning and provide some tips and resources if you are new to meal planning.

1.  Leftover Mashed Potato Gnocchi – These gnocchi are super easy to make and are a great way to use up leftover mashed potatoes.

Family Game Night: Bounce-Off

Family game night just got more fun when we recently played Bounce-Off.  My daughter had received this as a birthday present last year and we finally got around to finding some time to play it.  The game is made by Mattel and geared towards players ages 7+.  The game can be played by 2-4 people.  For our family game night we paired up, one child with one parent.

Bounce-Off Instructions

The concept is simple.  As seen above, the directions are short and sweet.  Bounce the colored balls and be the first person/team to make the pattern on the card.

Playing Bounce-Off

If you make the pattern first, you get the card.  The first player or team to win three cards wins.

Bounce-Off Game

Pros:  This is a fun game.  It’s not a quiet, sit around type of game.  You are sitting or standing and strategizing on where to bounce the balls.  There are two levels of difficulty.  The game contains 9 challenge cards, with 5 easy (yellow cards) and 4 harder (blue cards) for different levels of play.  It’s a quick game.  If you are short on time, you can just play one round.  If you want to make the game longer, you can play all the cards, instead of the winner being the first player to collect three cards.

Cons:  The balls bounce everywhere!  Be ready to catch the balls as they go bouncing off the table.  If you have wooden floors, like us, expect to go chasing after the balls as they bounce and roll.  The game is challenging.  Although it looks easy, bouncing those balls into the patterns on the card is actually more difficult than it appears.
Expect some rounds where no one wins.  Expect that some players may never win any of the cards.  More cards are needed.   The game only comes with 9 cards.  It would be useful to have additional cards available.

Verdict:  Recommend!  Lots of family fun was had by all!  Since we first opened the game we have played several additional times.

Every Ornament Tells a Story

Christmas Tree

When you see our Christmas tree from afar, it looks like lots of other decorated Christmas trees.  However, upon closer look, each of our ornaments tells a story.   Each Christmas, I get my husband and each of our kids an ornament that represents something significant that happened that year.  Since the husband reads the blog, I won’t share what his ornament is this year.  Our daughter started both piano and saxophone lessons this year, so we got her a music note ornament personalized with her name and the year.  Our son has been obsessed with the Disney character Stitch….I mean, obsessed!  So, this year, his ornament is a Stitch wearing a Santa hat.

We also have a family tradition of buying ornaments as a souvenirs from our travel and family fun.  Each Christmas as we decorate the tree we reminisce about our past outings and fun.

This tradition began the Christmas of 2001, when my husband and I had first started dating.

Elf Ornament

I gave him this elf ornament to remember the time that we spent baking lots of Christmas cookies for our families for the holidays.  Since then we have accumulated years of ornaments, each special in its own way.  Some of this year’s new additions include:

Rockland Boulders

A summer Rockland Boulders baseball game.  By the way, the above ornament is actually a key chain that the Weekend Chef turned into a Christmas ornament.  We’ve done this a lot since many places sell key chains but not ornaments.  It’s also often cheaper too!

Franklin D. Roosevelt Ornament

This is our most recently acquired ornament from our visit to the Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Disney Ornament

And of course, we can’t forget about our summer trip to Disney World!

We love decorating our tree together and looking at all the ornaments.  I love that when my children become adults and eventually have their own families and Christmas trees, they will always have a collection of their childhood memories.

What kind of ornaments do you have on your tree?

Friday Favorites {Week 41}

Friday Favorites

Happy Friday!  I cannot believe how quickly this week has flown by.  I am probably home today with my sick daughter.  As of yesterday, she was miserable with a cold.  She survived the day at school and made it through piano lessons.  But by yesterday evening she was miserable.  I told her we’d see how she was feeling this morning, but most likely she’d stay home with me.  This weekend we are enjoying two Hanukkah celebrations, one with friends and one with family.  Here are some favorites from this past week:

IMG_3466[1]

1. Supper Club Cookie Exchange – Every December, instead of cooking our Supper Club goes out to eat and exchanges cookies.  This year I made Melt-In-Your Mouth Eggnog Cookies from Cooking Classy and the Weekend Chef made Bourbon Balls for our exchange this past Saturday evening.  We also got some amazing cookies from members including homemade Oreos, Pecan Sandies, Cherry Rugelach and Peppermint filled Macarons.  The cookies were delicious and the restaurant we went to, Hopscotch, was also really good too!  It was a delicious evening!Pretty Girls

2.  Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter – I started this book earlier this week.  I’m about half-way through and it has me hooked!  I’ve only read one other Slaughter book before, but I’m not sure why I haven’t read more of her stuff.  I heard prior to reading that this book was pretty graphic, so I was warned before reading.

3. Instagram – I am loving Instagram and have been obsessed recently!  I love seeing everyone’s pics – food, travel, sunsets, books, family events….you get to see it all and it’s so inspiring! If you follow me, then you’ve seen most of these photos!

Madam Secretary (CBS) Logo.png

4.  Madam Secretary – I just finished watching all the episodes (first and second season) of this show available on Netflix.  I’m embarrassed to admit that I had no idea all that involved being Secretary of State. I love how parents (Tea Leoni and Tim Daly) balance work and parenthood.

5. Favorite bookmarked recipe:  This Winter Beet and Pomegranate Salad with Maple Candied Pecans + Balsamic Citrus Dressing from Half Baked Harvest. This sounds like a perfect winter salad that had me at beets and pomegranate!
