The Academy Opening Soon in Poughkeepsie

The Academy is the newest culinary addition to the city of Poughkeepsie. Is it a food hall, a restaurant, or a market? It will feature all of these things and more when it opens to the public in a couple of weeks. It starts off as a food and beverage establishment including event space and, later this year, there will be 28 adjacent apartments and coworking space, completing the developers intentions of creating a mixed-use destination.

This past weekend, I attended the grand opening celebration and got an early first-hand glimpse of all The Academy has to offer.

The building at 33 Academy Street was, most recently, a nightclub. Baxter, a Hudson Valley real estate development and property management firm, has spearheaded the transformation of the space into what is now The Academy.

The first thing to note about The Academy is that it’s highly Instagrammable! Everything from the indoor and outdoor murals and the neon signs in the bathrooms (yes, you need to check them out!) scream, “take my picture!”.

The bottom floor of the building houses the food hall, The Academy Market, and The Academy Kitchen. These operations are led by Rachel Potts, the Culinary Director and Executive Chef, and David Lombardo, the Food & Beverage Director. Food hall vendors include: Smoke 33 (BBQ), Valley Greens (salads)and East-West (Asian).

Hudson Hopworks serves a rotating collection of mostly locally-brewed beer on tap, in cans and bottles. There’s even a signature The Academy craft brew coming soon.

Cafe + Grill serves hot and cold prepared foods and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They sell a variety of mains and sides by the pound, which is a great option for busy nights when you don’t feel like cooking but don’t want to go out to eat.

The Newburgh Flour Shop will round out the food vendors and will be selling their homemade breads and baked goods. You can also order one of their custom cakes for any celebration.

Although it wasn’t open the day of the grand opening celebration, The Academy Market will sell locally-sourced produce, meat, and seafood. The Market will have a café serving coffee, kombucha on tap, nitro cold brew and more. The Grill + Deli will have made-to-order sandwiches and prepared foods.

Every food vendor has vegetarian food options, with many offering vegan options as well. While we expect Valley Greens to have plenty of vegetarian options, it was nice to see vegetarian-friendly items on the other menus. East-West makes edamame dumplings, Impossible Buns and mushroom broth ramen. Smoke 33 has a Smoked Cauliflower Steak and Loaded Chili Smoked Sweet Potato as vegetarian main options, as well as many sides. I can’t wait until The Academy officially opens to be able to sample all these offerings!

A centrally-located bar on the bottom floor separates the food hall from The Academy Kitchen. The bar will be overseen by head mixologist Ben Friedman and will serve signature, as well as classic, cocktails.

The Academy Kitchen seats 75 and serves dinner daily and brunch on the weekends. The modern American menu includes a variety of appetizers, salads and entrees. You’ll find steaks, seafood, burgers and more, with plenty of vegetarian options.

Keepsake occupies the upstairs space of the building. It’s an 8700 square foot event space designed to host weddings and special celebrations.

It is inspiring to see the revitalization of Poughkeepsie and The Academy is a great addition to the city’s food and restaurant space. It is open from morning until night and offers all kinds of food options. Make a stop in Poughkeepsie soon and check out The Academy!

Five on Friday {June 24, 2022}

Hello Friday! I didn’t have a post last week since it was such a busy one. So lots to catch up on today! This week the kids had their last finals and regents’ and are officially finished with school! Here are five from this week:

Photo c/o Cirque du Soleil

1. Cirque du Soleil  – Last Thursday I had media tickets to see Cirque du Soleil Crystal. This is their only show that takes place on ice. If you’ve never seen a Cirque du Soleil show, I highly recommend. They are filled with amazing talent!

2. Menopause the Musical – Friday I had media tickets for Menopause the Musical, which is playing at the Chappaqua Performing Arts Center through tomorrow. Fortunately, I’m not experiencing menopause yet, but it was a fun show.

3. Reading – This week I haven’t finished reading anything. But last week I finished listening to I Kissed Shara Wheeler on book on CD. I feel like this has gotten rave reviews, but I thought it was just an okay listen.

4. Cooking – This week I made these Portobello French Dips with Horseradish Aioli. As mushroom lovers, my husband and I thought these were sooo good!

5. Watching – Last weekend we watched the original Top Gun as a family. My daughter saw the new Top Gun sequel and loved it, so we thought she should see the first one. Now she is adamant that my husband and I go see Top Gun: Maverick.

6. Moving Up – Yesterday my son “graduated” from 8th grade and had his moving up ceremony. I can’t believe this September I will have two kids in high school!

7. Summer Leagues – My kids are both participating in summer sports leagues in preparation for the fall. Field hockey for my daughter and soccer for my son. The leagues started last week so they are playing games a couple nights a week.

8. NY Boulders Game – For Father’s Day my husband wanted to go to a local baseball game. The Renegades weren’t playing at home so we went to a NY Boulders game. We ended up going Saturday night since my son had a soccer game on Sunday. We didn’t realize it was going to be so cold! We were freezing but stayed until the end, when the Boulders had a winning run in the bottom of the 9th.

9. Miami – How did I almost forget about our trip to Miami for my brother-in-law’s wedding?!! It was a whirlwind couple of days and my son ended up getting sick and was not able to attend the wedding. But it was a beautiful ceremony and super fun reception. I wish we were able to stay a couple of extra days to explore Miami, but it was the weekend right before the kids started finals and regents’ so we had to get home.

Sharing with Friday Favorites!  Have a great weekend!

The Westchester Theatre Presents: Menopause The Musical

NY Foodie Family was provided media tickets to Menopause the Musical. All opinions are our own.

Women are all familiar with “The Change.” If we haven’t experienced menopause yet, we know it’s arriving eventually: the hot flashes, the mood swings, and the memory loss.  Menopause the Musical is here to give everyone a laugh (women and men alike) as we commiserate together over this inevitable biological experience.

Menopause the Musical was written by Jeanie Linders and debuted in 2001 in Orlando, Florida. Since then, it became an off-Broadway show that ran for four years in Manhattan. Then the show became a Las Vegas production that has been performed at Harrah’s continuously since 2006 and also began traveling as a national touring production. From June 15 through June 25, guests can see Menopause the Musical presented by The Westchester Theatre performed at the Chappaqua Performing Arts Center

The show opens with four women shopping at a Bloomingdale’s lingerie sale. The women are unnamed but are cast as Professional Woman, Soap Star, Earth Mother and Iowa Housewife. They start as strangers, fighting over a black bra, but bond through their menopausal symptoms and end as friends.

This production stars Adrianne Hick (Soap Star), Terry Palasz (Iowa Housewife), Amy Jo Phillips (Earth Mother) and a rotating cast performing Professional Woman: Enga Davis, Tauren Hagans and Joy Lynn Jacobs. It is a musical parody featuring over 25 songs from artists including Cher, The Beach Boys, Aretha Franklin and The Bee Gees, whose lyrics have been altered to fit the theme of the musical. You’ll hear the women belt out songs like “Staying Awake/Night Sweatin'”, “Puff, My God, I’m Draggin'” and “My Husband Sleeps Tonight”.

The entire musical takes place in Bloomingdale’s over the course of a day. There is only one set piece for the duration of the show but an array of props and elevator announcements indicate different floors of Bloomingdale’s. The show runs continuously for 90 minutes with no intermission.

Although the target audience is women going through or who have experienced “The Change”, this show is not exclusively for this demographic! I saw the show with a girlfriend, both of us having many years before we experience menopause, and there were several men in the audience as well. A good time was had by all.

Menopause the Musical is a fun production that has the audience laughing out loud throughout the show. There is one more week left to see this musical at the Chappaqua Performing Arts Center before it moves on to Milwaukee!

Cirque du Soleil Presents: Crystal

Photo c/o Cirque du Soleil

NY Foodie Family was provided with media tickets to Cirque du Soleil Crystal. All opinions are our own.

Performers speed by on ice skates doing jumps and flips. Others twist in the air, tethered to the sky. This is just a hint of the sights you will see at Cirque du Soleil’s currently-touring show: Crystal.

Cirque du Soleil has been wowing audiences with their circus art performances since the company’s debut in 1984. The group started with just 20 performers and has grown to over 1,400 artists.  Cirque du Soleil’s O at the Bellagio in Las Vegas is an aquatic masterpiece. Love is a musical love note to The Beatles. Volta is based on extreme sports. Crystal is the company’s first show that brings the circus arts to the ice.

Photo c/o Cirque du Soleil

This show tells the story of Crystal, a misunderstood artist. When she falls through a frozen pond she is transported into another world. Her reflection helps guide her on a path of self discovery. According to a press release, “The show Crystal is about looking at things from fresh angles, peeking through the veneer of everyday life, reframing one’s daily reality to see what one might have missed. Sometimes the only way to appreciate things is to look at them sideways. Discovering one’s individuality and uniqueness requires venturing out on thin ice.”

Guests will see artists juggling, swinging on pendular poles and tap dancing on the ice. More traditional activities like ice hockey and ice dancing will also be performed but with the signature jaw-dropping moves of Cirque du Soleil.

Photo c/o Cirque du Soleil

The performance is set to an eclectic mix of music that includes covers of pop hits including U2’s “Beautiful Day,” Beyonce’s “Halo” and Sia’s “Chandelier” as well as orchestral sounds and even klezmer-style chamber music. Throughout the show, musicians play instruments including the violin, saxophone and accordion. Colorful projections on the stage and ice help immerse you in the story.

Crystal, the company’s 42nd production has been touring arenas since December 2017. The show debuted last night at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.  There are four additional performances through June 19th. The show will then move on to Philadelphia (PA), Ontario, Providence (RI), Cleveland (OH),  Elmont (NY), Bridgeport (CT) and Albany (NY) before continuing to Europe in September.

Ever since seeing my first Cirque du Soleil show more than 20 years ago, I’ve been a fan. The acrobatic feats of the performers have me in awe and every performance I’ve seen has been an entertaining and mesmerizing experience. Similarly, Crystal did not disappoint. From the opening narration to the closing bows, it was a phenomenal ice show. The performers had the audience laughing, clapping, oohing and ahhing.

This show is family-friendly and appropriate for guests of all ages. While younger children may not understand the storyline, they will still be awed by the acrobatic feats. Seeing Crystal is a perfect way to cool off on a hot summer day.

May Reads {2022}

It’s almost officially summer and I am looking forward to more light, beach type reads. I read several new releases in May that fit the bill and overall I had a pretty good reading month. I’m hoping to continue the trend through the summer! I’m sharing my May Reads with Steph and Jana’s Show Us Your Books linkup.

3 stars

The Guilt Trip by Sandie Jones (Mystery/Suspense, August 2021) Three couples take a trip to Portugal for a wedding. Will and Ali are getting married and have invited Will’s brother Jack and his wife Rachel and Rachel’s friend’s Noah and Page to stay at their villa with them. As the weekend unfolds, there are lots of secrets that are revealed. This book was just an okay read for me. I didn’t like any of the characters and wasn’t very invested in the story.

The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes (YA/Mystery, September 2020) Teen Avery Grambs sometimes sleeps in her car, lives with her half sister Libby and her boyfriend, and is trying to survive high school. Her life is changed when she inherits the fortune of billionaire Tobias Hawthorne. The one stipulation is that she must live in his residence for a year….which is currently inhabited by his four grandsons and their mother. They discover that the puzzle loving man left them a series of clues that will possibly explain why he left his fortune to Avery. I listened to this on book on CD. It was an okay read but I’m not sure that I enjoyed it enough to continue the series.

The Summer Place by Jennifer Weiner (Contemporary Fiction, May 2022) Sarah and her husband Eli have not been close for awhile. At the age of 22, Sarah’s step-daughter Ruby announces that she is getting married at her safta’s (grandmother’s) house on Cape Cod. Sarah’s mom is excited to have the family out for one last hurrah before she sells the house. There was a lot going on in this book with so many secrets and what I found to be unbelievable situations. Not my fave of Weiner’s.

4 stars

The Golden Couple by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen (suspense, March 2022) Counselor Avery Chambers has new clients, Marissa and Matthew Bishop. They seem like, “the golden couple” but Marissa discloses that she’s had an affair. This isn’t the only secret that one of them has been keeping. I listened to this on book on CD and I found it fast-paced and engaging.

Sadie on a Plate by Amanda Elliott (Contemporary romance, March 2022) Sadie meets Luke on the plane as she’s flying to compete on her favorite cooking show Chef Supreme. But she gets a surprise when Luke makes an unexpected appearance. Foodies and fans of Top Chef will likely enjoy this book as much as I did!

5 stars

Book Lovers by Emily Henry (Contemporary romance, May 2022) Literary agent Nora Stephens takes a month long vacation with her sister Libby. It took a lot of convincing by Libby, but the two end up in the small town of Sunshine Falls, North Carolina. She ends up running into Charlie Lastra, a book editor whom she had a not such a great encounter with back in the city. Somehow, they keep bumping into each other. I loved the chemistry and witty dialogue between Nora and Charlie. It was one of those books that I didn’t want to end. I’ve read and enjoyed Beach Read and People We Meet on Vacation, but I think this is my favorite!

Part of Your World by Abby Jimenez (Contemporary romance, May 2022) Alexis Montgomery is an ER doctor, She is extremely wealthy and is expected to carry on her family’s legacy. She meets Daniel Grant, when he comes to her rescue and pulls her car out of a ditch, when she’s driving through the small town of Wakanda. He runs the local Bed & Breakfast, is a carpenter and is also the mayor of Wakanda. The two end up having great chemistry but Alexis knows that nothing can come of them starting a relationship, since their worlds are too different. Abby Jimenez is one of my new favorite authors. I’ve read all her books and they just keep getting better and better. Highly recommend her and this book if you enjoy contemporary romance.

Five on Friday {June 10, 2022}

Happy Friday! Today I am in Miami because my brother-in-law is getting married tomorrow! This wedding has been postponed for two years because of COVID. They ended up getting married over Zoom last January and they are finally getting to celebrate in person with family and friends. It will be a busy but fun couple of days! Here are five from this week:

1. Newburgh: Illuminated– Saturday we drove to my in-laws house to drop off our luggage. They drove down to Miami so we had them bring all of our dress clothes and suitcases. It helped us save on luggage fees and not have to stuff our clothes in a garment bag. While we were up in the Orange County area we stopped at the Newburgh Illuminated Festival. We enjoyed taking a historical bus tour of the city, listened to some live music and walked around a bit. It was very crowded!

2. Eating – When we were up in Newburgh we stopped at Pizza Mia on the way home. We picked up a variety of slices and garlic knots to take home for dinner. This was the first time I had a Detroit style slice and it won’t be my last time! I like the thicker dough and square slices!

Sunday my son had a Boy Scout event at The Castle Fun Center in Chester. So the we took the whole family. After we dropped him off my daughter, husband and I had lunch at Allan’s Falafel. We ordered the falafel deluxe platter and eggplant salad. It was so good!

3. Reading – This week I read Dessert Can Save the World by Christina Tosi. This is a short, memoir/motivational read.

4. Cooking – This week we made Big Flavors From a Tiny Kitchen’s Falafel-Spice Chickpea Flatbreads again. These are quick and easy to make and very tasty!

5. Watching – Friday night we watched the movie Licorice Pizza.  It was an Oscar nominated movie. We also finished watching Stranger Things and have started watching the new episodes of Somebody Feed Phil.

6. Goose Pond Mountain – After lunch we found a short hike in the area. It was very short at only .4 miles. But we saw a rainbow and some birds.

Sharing with Friday Favorites!  Have a great weekend!

Peekskill Brewery Pizza & Beer: Live at the Valley

From 7 PM – 10 PM, come enjoy an evening of live music, craft beer, food trucks, vendors, family games, kids activities and more. I highly recommend grabbing a slice (or two) and a beer from PB Pizza & Beer.

Tonight, Pizzazzles will have glitter tattoos and face painting for $5. Chomp Mobile Pet Boutique will be there so you can stock up on all your pet supplies. Unraveled in Twine will be there selling their homemade self-care products including jewelry and bath and body products. Grateful Duo

The summer music lineup includes:

July 29th: Plane Station – This is a brother and sister duo, with Nick playing acoustic guitar and Brianna playing the piano.

Five on Friday {June 3, 2022}

Happy Friday! I hope you had a great week! It was nice having a long three day weekend last week. A lot of the weekend was spent doing house stuff including power washing the deck and taking care of an unexpected HVAC issue. I also did a bit of shopping in preparation of my brother-in-law’s wedding next weekend. But, we did manage to fit in some fun. Here are five from this week:

1. Dia Beacon – Sunday we went to Dia Beacon. This is a contemporary museum in Beacon, one of my favorite Hudson Valley towns. Even though we’ve been here several times, we took a museum tour for the first time and it was so enlightening!

2. Eating – I treated myself to The Angry Lobster Roll from Wild Fusion. It has tempura shrimp and spicy crabmeat rolled in a soy paper wrapped topped with steamed lobster and an eel and sweet chili sauce.  Very tasty!

I also enjoyed the stir fried eggplant from P.F. Chang’s. However, the Kung Pao Brussels Sprouts that I also ordered were a bit disappointing.

3. Reading – This week I finished Part Of Your World by Abby Jimenez and it was SO good! I’ve read all her books and I highly recommend them if you like contemporary romance.

4. Cooking – This week one of our favorite dinners was Grilled Chimichurri Portobellos with Goat Cheese Mashed Potatoes. I love mushrooms! And adding goat cheese to mashed potatoes is so delicious!

5. Watching – Of course we started watching the new season of Stranger Things! Anyone else? I also finally finished watching Candy on Hulu this week.

6. Two Way Brewing Company – after the museum we visited a new-to-us brewery, Two Way Brewing, in Beacon. My husband had a beer flight and we ordered some food. We plan on visiting more breweries this summer!

7. Buff City Soap – A Buff City Soap just opened in Mohegan Lake. I visited and picked up two soaps as well as a mystery box. I love the items I received in the box and they all smell sooo good!

ICYMI this week on the blog:

Thursday I shared our Hudson Valley Summer Fun List.

Sharing with Friday Favorites!  Have a great weekend!

2022 Hudson Valley Summer Fun List

Memorial Day weekend kicked off the unofficial start to summer and we’ve curated a list of fun things to do this season. We love living in the Hudson Valley. There’s so much to see, eat and do and summer is the perfect time to take advantage of it all. What are you looking forward to doing? Is there anything else we should add to our summer fun list?
*As always, please check directly with any businesses listed for the most up-to-date information.

VISIT AN AMUSEMENT PARK OR WATER PARK:

The Hudson Valley is home to a variety of amusement and water parks. For younger kids, a trip to the recently opened LEGOLAND New York is a must. Playland is a Westchester County classic and so close to home. For those looking for a water park, make a visit to SplashDown Beach or the Kartrite.

GET ON THE WATER:

Most of the Hudson Valley is on or near to the Hudson River. There’s no better season than summer to get out on the water and enjoy the beauty of the river.

Boat cruise: Is there a better way to watch the sunset, learn about history, or just see some spectacular scenery than on a boat?

Hudson River Cruises in Kingston, New York Boat Company in Peekskill and Pride of the Hudson
in Newburgh all offer sightseeing cruises on the Hudson River.

Canoe/Kayak/SUP:

Hudson River Expeditions has locations in Beacon, Cold Spring and Peekskill and offer rentals and instruction. Beginning Memorial Day weekend through the beginning of October you can kayak, paddleboard or SUP.

Fishing: Fishing is a relaxing activity that many people enjoy. There are lots of places to fish throughout the Hudson Valley. Just make sure you have the proper license. Important to note, according to the NYS Dept. of Health, women under 50 and children under 15 should not eat any fish caught in the Hudson River.

Paddle Boats: When was the last time you took a leisurely paddle around a lake?

Bear Mountain State Park and Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park offer paddle boat and row boat rentals by the hour.

GET OUTSIDE:

Go on a Bike Ride: There are several bike paths throughout the Hudson Valley that offer flat, scenic bike rides.

Bronx River Parkway Bicycle Sundays – On select Sundays in June, July, September and October, the Bronx River Parkway is closed so bicyclists, in-line skaters, joggers and walkers can safely enjoy the roadway.

Dutchess Rail Trail – This 13.4 mile trail runs from the Walkway Over the Hudson (Poughkeepsie) to Hopewell Junction.

Check out our A Bike Ride on the Dutchess Rail Trail post.

North County Trailway – This trailway runs from the South County Trailway at Old Saw Mill River Road (Elmsford) to the Putnam Trailway at NY 118/Tomahawk St. (Baldwin Place) and spans 20.7 miles.

Take a Hike: There are hundreds of hiking trails in the Hudson Valley so go check out a new-to-you trail. If you are a frequent hiker, we recommend purchasing the NY State Empire Pass, which allows free parking in most state parks. For inspiration, read our 5 Hudson Valley Loop Hikes post.

Go Fruit Picking – Strawberries, blueberries, peaches and more. There’s no shortage of farms to pick your own fruit. Check out our pick-your-own fruit guide for more info.

Go Mini-Golfing: The Hudson Valley has several outdoor mini golf courses. This is a great idea for a birthday party, family outing or date night. Check out our mini golf guide for more info on the different places to mini golf in Westchester!

Go for a Swim: There are numerous beaches, lakes and pools that are open to the public.

GET CULTURED
The Hudson Valley has no shortage of museums. Visit one on a rainy day or to escape the heat. Here are a few that we have visited and recommend:

DIA Beacon – This contemporary art museum opened in 2003 in Beacon. It features art from the 1960’s to the present. Check out our post.

The Museum at Bethel Woods – Through its exhibits, personal profiles and videos the Museum at Bethel Woods showcases the experience of the 1969 Woodstock Music and Art Festival. Check out our post.

Magazzino Italian Art – This facility in Cold Spring contains both a museum and research center focused on postwar and contemporary Italian art in the United States. Check out our post.

For those with young kids, check out the Westchester Children’s Museum in Rye.

EAT & DRINK

We love to spend our summer eating and drinking around the Hudson Valley. There are so many restaurants, bars and coffee shops to visit. However, we believe the below options offer some of the best summer experiences.

Breweries: I haven’t counted them all, but I’m guessing there are probably over 100 breweries in the Hudson Valley. You can make a summer goal of visiting a new one every week….but you will won’t get to them all! Many of the breweries offer outdoor seating and often have live music on the weekends.

Wineries: There are many wineries throughout the Hudson Valley that offer wine tastings, outdoor seating with scenic views and live music on weekends.

Farmers Markets: Every weekend (and even some weekdays) there are several local farmers markets that you can visit. Stock up on locally-grown fruits and vegetables, buy some freshly-baked bread, pick up some baked goods and prepared foods. Support local! Check out our Farmers Market guide for more details.

Food Trucks: Food trucks have exploded in popularity. There are trucks for almost any type of cuisine you may be craving. Make sure to check some out this summer! Use our food truck guide to help you decide which ones to try!

Ice Cream: A fun family summer goal is try to hit as many Hudson Valley ice cream spots as possible. There are lots of delicious options spanning the different counties!

OTHER FUN:

Baseball Game – The Hudson Valley is home to two minor league baseball teams, the Hudson Valley Renegades and the NY Boulders. This is an affordable and fun family outing, close to home.

Rail Explorers – Enjoy a unique experience in the Catskills pedaling an explorer alongside the Esopus Creek. Check out our post.
