It’s time to share my May 2018 Reads with Steph and Jana’s monthly Show Us Your Books linkup. May was a slow reading month for me. I was busy and when I did have some free time, I was just not motivated to read. June is off to a great start though, so hopefully my reading mojo is back! Here are my May reads:
3 Stars
One Of Us Is Lying by Karen McManus – I started this book months ago, wasn’t into it and returned it to the library unfinished. Then, several SUYB bloggers raved about it. So I decided that I needed to give it another try. It was Breakfast Club-esque. It’s also a YA book and I feel like it read like a YA book. Overall, it was an okay read for me but I’m glad that I went back and finished it.
Sweetbitter by Stephanie Danler – I hadn’t heard of this book until I discovered that Starz was creating a television show based on it. I’m all about reading the book before the show or movie so I had to give it a try. As a foodie, I loved reading about the food and getting a behind the scenes look at the restaurant. However, I found the writing to be overly-wordy and I found none of the characters really likeable. I’m curious to see what the show is like though. Has anyone seen it?!
You Are a Badass at Making Money by Jen Sincero – I really liked Sincero’s first book, You Are a Badass. Her second book focuses on bringing more money into your life via manifesting and mindset. Not a bad book if you are into that type of thing.
4 Stars
Now That You Mention It by Kristan Higgins – When Nora Stuart is injured in an accident, she moves from Boston back to her small hometown of Maine to recover. While there, she ends up discovering things about her past and forges new relationships. I enjoyed this book and think it would make a good summer read. This was my first Higgins book, but I think I may check some of her other books out.
Your Best Year Ever by Michael Hyatt – This was the second non-fiction book that I read this month. Your Best Year Ever provides an actionable 5-step plan to reach your goals. It’s motivational and helpful in goal setting. However, I think I’d get more out of this book if I owned it, rather than borrowed it from the library.
I do love a good non-fiction/self-help type of book, though I haven’t read either of these. I still need to read One of Us is Lying but I’m pretty sure I’ll enjoy it!

Most people who have read One of Us is Lying have enjoyed it. I thought it was okay, I didn’t dislike it. I’ve been trying to read at least one non-fiction book a month. Self-help books just tend to be my favorites.
That happens to me a lot, where I check out a book from the library (since that’s where I get most of my books) and then wish I had bought it instead. You just never know though!
I have Sweetbitter on my TBR although I had forgotten about it. I don’t know why I still haven’t gotten to You Are a Badass–that is one I really do want to read, as well as the money one.
Yes, self-help books need to be borrowed first though since so many are hit-or-miss. Then once I know it’s useful I can go buy it!
I will have to give the Higgins book a try. May was a reading slump month for me too! It’s always a busy month, and I’d rather veg out with tv or internet instead of reading at those times!
Yes, it’s so hard to get motivated to read! June is looking better for me though.
Now That You Mention It was my first Higgans book too. I have a bunch more on my list, she has a new one coming out in a couple months that people are super cranky about – Good Luck with that I think it’s called. bummer about one of us is lying, i quite liked it!
A lot of people liked One of Us is Lying. I’ve heard some of Higgins’ earlier books are good so I may try some of those out!
One of Us is Lying is definitely YA and reads like it but I enjoyed it just the same.
I decided not to read Sweetbitter.
I’ve considered the bad ass books!
The bad ass books are good if you are into mindset/manifestation. Otherwise, you may dislike them.
I haven’t read One of Us is Lying yet but it’s on my TBR. As a foodie, Sweetbitter intrigues but I’ve seen a lot of negative reviews for it. I have not watched the show but the promos didn’t really entice me. I like to borrow self-help books from the library and if they are good one, then buy them. Self-help can be so hit-and-miss that I want to know that I like (or believe or will do) the work before forking over my cold, hard cash. LOL!
I haven’t seen many promos for the show. Whenever I see a movie or show based on a book I just feel the need to read the book! Oh yeah, I will not buy a self-help book until I read it first from the library. Totally hear you on them being hit or miss!
Oh I enjoy a good self help book sometimes and that one by Michael Hyatt is on my list so I’m glad you found it worthwhile!! I think I will check out Kristan Higgans sometime – I’ve heard mixed things but that one sounds good!
Yeah, I’ve been on a self help book kick recently. And trying to read one non-fiction book a month gets me to read more of them!
I was interested in Sweetbitter when I heard that it was being made into a show on Starz as well! That’s a bummer that none of the characters are likeable though. Sometimes that just makes it harder to read.
Yeah, even though it was just okay I’m glad I read it before watching the show though.
One of Us Is Lying is currently on hold for me at the library! I don’t mind YA every once in awhile, so hopefully I will enjoy it! I read Girl Wash Your Face this past month and really enjoyed it!
I enjoy YA, but One Of Us is Lying was just eh.
I love that Kristan Higgins book. I have liked her last two and have her latest to get to. I won One of Us is Lying and need to read it still.
I will have to check out Higgins other books. They seem like light, good summer reads.
my mom was obsessed with sweetbitter and I felt a little let down after reading it. however, can’t wait to watch the series!
Yes, I want to see the show!
I did not like Sweetbitter at all. And I don’t have Starz so I won’t be watching it.
You Are a Badass fell flat for me, too.
Yeah, Sweetbitter was just okay but I’m curious to see the show now.
One Of Us Is Lying has been on my TBR, because everybody keeps rec’ing it. Glad you picked it back up and got through it. That always feels like an accomplishment. Adding Your Best Year Ever to the TBR. Thanks for the rec’s and glad your June is starting off strong!
Yeah, I’m glad I finished One Of Us is Lying I just wasn’t wowed by it.
I would probably watch an episode of Sweetbitter if it were on Hulu or something. I’ve heard mixed reviews about the book.
Yeah, I don’t recommend Sweetbitter unless you’re really into the food/restaurant scene. I am curious how the show is.
I also love books that will be movies or TV shows!! It gives me an incentive to read them quickly!! The description of Sweet Bitter sounds like Anthony Bourdain’s book Kitchen Confidential… if you haven’t read it, that is an amazing book.
I own Kitchen Confidential and haven’t read it. I definitely will try to get to that one sooner than later.
I have One of Us is Lying requested from the library! I’m really interested in Your Best Year Ever and You are a Badass at Making Money. I like those kind of books so definitely going to look into them 🙂
I’ve been on a self-help book kick and I’m all into self-improvement books. I’m curious to see what you think about One Of Us is Lying.
